MAKING THE INVISIBLE, VISIBLE
Marian Chaney, HR Director at Julius Rutherfoord & Co explains how employee culture can motivate a cleaning workforce.
When I say that it’s important for cleaning providers to create a motivated and happy workforce, I’m not just being virtuous. It’s true that treating your workforce well is the right thing to do, but a motivated cleaning workforce also feeds into the commerciality of your business.
Turning the invisible workforce into a
visible one As we all know, the cleaning workforce is often deeply undervalued. Staff turnover can be high, and motivation can be lacking. Commercial cleaning businesses like ours face barriers such as a remote workforce, and the ‘us and them’ mindset that can foster between field staff and head office. But against this backdrop, the simple act of recognising and valuing our cleaners becomes all the more powerful.
At JR&Co, we’re immensely proud of the culture we have created for our cleaners. Our cleaning operatives are motivated through multiple avenues, but one of our most popular initiatives is our JR&Co Stars scheme. Whenever

our clients nominate their cleaners for going above and beyond in their role, nominees are presented with a certificate and gift voucher to thank them for their work. We make sure the award is presented to the cleaner in person by their manager, and the impact on the individuals is huge, helping them to feel positive, valued, and in turn, motivated.
The power of listening As well as feeling seen, we also make sure our cleaning operatives feel heard. Our biannual focus groups bring together a cross-section of cleaners along with the senior leadership team. Here, operatives can have their say, voice concerns or bring ideas to the table. Through listening we can provide the tools our cleaners want and need such as equipment, training, or further initiatives such as our long service award.
In October, we hosted our first ‘Thank your Cleaner’ party. It was a huge success. A day dedicated to celebrating our inspirational cleaners and the vital work they do. But the
