‘THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING EMPLOYEES CAN’T BE UNDERSTATED’, SAYS EETD’S


DELIA CANNINGS Delia Cannings, Director of Environmental Excellence Training and Development has been a ‘warrior’ in the fight to raise the profile of cleaning operators and the importance of training within the cleaning industry for over three decades.


Very little consideration is given to the fact that skilled operatives and their managers are contributing to the health and welfare of any individual who sets foot into a building anywhere and that creating safer spaces contributes to wellbeing and gives reassurance to building users.


However, this nonsense was highlighted in the last few years due to the Pandemic. It quickly became obvious that skilled operatives would be essential in all workplaces, it was not just the NHS that required skilled operators. Although the message was lost on many and ignorance prevailed. A draconian view expressed by some that cleaning teams were not front liners is a major aspect of concern and is being addressed through the work of the APPG led by the British Cleaning Council.


An essential entry cleaning qualification has been suggested as the way forward. A review of the levy fund allocations enabling accessibility outside of Apprenticeships is a real debate to be had. Training and education is the key to success supporting progression


Currently the Deputy Chairperson of the British Cleaning Council and National Lead for Education and Training for the Ahcp she has been part of the endeavour to establish Apprenticeships in cleaning. Delia was part of a small team who developed the Apprenticeship in Healthcare Cleaning, approved for delivery February 2020 and more recently involved with the development of the Cleaning and Hygiene Apprenticeship. She also played a key role in the implementation of the NHS National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness 2021.


Prior to the recently developed Apprenticeships there were very few externally regulated cleaning qualifications.


We are all aware that there is an attitude that ‘anybody can clean’ and that it is a low skilled occupation.

A high-quality comprehensive training programme provides staff with skills, knowledge and a greater understanding of a company’s culture. It will also help staff to identify equal access to rewards, resources and opportunities.


Providing training cultivates an inclusive organisation. Staff feel they have a voice, a sense of belonging as their contributions are valued. Their uniqueness, individuality is acknowledged and the contribution it can make to business growth.


Delia’s mantra is ‘The importance of training employees can’t be understated’. Training helps equip your workforce with the skills they need to do their jobs effectively and safely and in so doing, provides reassurance to the users of our buildings.


One key reason why training is important is the effect it can have on company culture. Effective employee training can improve employee loyalty, satisfaction, and commitment to your organisation. Management training also teaches essential leadership skills, setting
