COVER STORY
PaperCircle at its Cambridge site since May 2021. Co- ordinated by Sodexo, the trial has been highly successful.
“AstraZeneca wants to become an example in new technologies and services that reduce pressure on the environment,” said the company’s Cambridge Director of Supplier Relationship Scientific Services, Waste and Logistics Brian Moroney. “Tork PaperCircle fits well with our own ambitions on reducing waste and lowering our carbon footprint.”
AstraZeneca was already signed up to Tork PaperCircle in Sweden, so it was a logical step for the company to extend the service to its Cambridge facility in the UK.
The company wants to go carbon neutral by 2025 and zero carbon by 2030 while also ensuring that its waste volumes do not exceed 2015 figures. Tork PaperCircle can support this ambition.
Brian Moroney admits that the process of recycling used paper hand towels requires a change of behaviour on the part of cleaning staff and washroom users. “But it is the right thing to do,” he added. “The appetite for sustainability within AstraZeneca and Sodexo is high, and the communication materials and support that comes with Tork PaperCircle have helped us to engage our employees and cleaning staff.”
Clients signed up to Tork PaperCircle need to adapt the washroom environment to suit the new process. Cleaners have to be retrained to dispose of used towels separately and washroom visitors require clear instructions on how and why they need to put their paper towels in a separate bin.
Essity has addressed the issue by adopting behavioural science techniques to ‘nudge’ consumers to dispose of hand towels in the separate containers provided. Clear signage around the washroom informs visitors about the goals of Tork PaperCircle as well as the benefits of paper hand towel recycling.

Tork PaperCircle has already won multiple awards including an Innovation Award and Visitor’s Choice Award at Interclean Amsterdam 2018 and the Best Practice- Sustainability prize the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2018.
The recycling of hand towels offers a number of important benefits to customers. It helps them to reach their waste and carbon footprint targets and enhance their sustainability credentials. It also allows them to showcase their commitment to a circular society, drawing attention to their sustainable actions through creative communication and signage.
Essity is fully committed to sustainability. The company featured in the 2020 Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index, earning high scores for its environmental and social reporting plus its work with suppliers, innovation and climate strategy in the Household Products category of the index.
AstraZeneca now plans to roll out Tork PaperCircle to all its the laboratory hand wash areas and potentially across the rest of its Cambridge Granta Park site as well. “We will scale up this service to contribute to our goal of a future-proof and sustainable business,” said Brian Moroney.
Charishma Kothari, Services and Solutions Director at Essity’s professional hygiene business says the launch of Tork PaperCircle is an ethical, sustainable and essential step forward in today’s world. “If we want to live in a more sustainable society, we have to become better at using our resources and sorting our waste so that it can be recycled in the most appropriate way,” she said. “We’re talking about changing ingrained habits - and companies have a responsibility to make it easier for employees to do this.”
