Sustainability Initiatives by Principle Cleaning Services

About this Product/Service

Principle’s aim has always been to lead the industry on environmental issues and their social impact, and to be the UK’s most sustainable cleaning company.

Principle is Planet Mark accredited and works closely with its clients and suppliers to promote the benefits of products and services with reduced environmental impact including cutting carbon emissions, encouraging recycling, minimising the impact of travel and reducing water and energy consumption and waste.

Its Sustainability Project team focuses on environmental issues and undertakes a continuous review of the company’s performance on its journey towards net zero - both at clients’ sites and within its own head office.

Company Profile

Principle Cleaning Services is a market-leader in providing corporate, commercial cleaning in London. Established in 1989 and privately-owned, it has an annual turnover in excess of £62m and employs over 2,200 people, with clients including The Shard, London Bridge City and 30 St Mary Axe.

Principle has held three sustainability conferences in conjunction with its client, Barings, featuring a variety of expert guest speakers on topics including the circular economy and social value.

The company introduced Hybrid cleaning - a process, which uses a full-time workforce to operate flexibly with any business and develop ways of improving quality and service in a sustainable way.

In December 2020, Principle created ‘Safe Space’ - in conjunction with Hygiena and Gem Scientific, after identifying a need for more rigorous and evidence-based cleaning (as a result of the pandemic), using science and technology including ATP testing, to mitigate risk and give reassurance to building users.

Needs-based cleaning is another sustainable advance in the company’s sustainable cleaning model. Through its award-winning PCS Connect system, designated zones can be cleaned at predetermined frequencies by autonomously scheduling workflow for housekeeping teams throughout the day.

Principle has also developed its own window cleaning monitoring software called ‘Drop Marking’. This technology provides a real time record of the progress of scheduled cleans with the information feeding directly into ‘YourPrinciple’ - Principle’s in-house, online platform, which not only transforms IT systems and processes but is part of a drive towards paperless collaboration and engagement within the cleaning industry.
