CMD Ltd explains how it helped power up police training in South Wales to ensure the future fl exibility of a £28m project.

As part of an investment in new facilities, a new South Wales Police Learning Centre is being built at the force’s existing police headquarters in Bridgend.

The £28m purpose-built Learning Centre will combine all the South Wales Police’s teaching requirements within a single four-storey building, which is due for completion by the end of 2021. The project includes a 114 space lecture theatre, an open atrium for fl exible learning and break out spaces, open plan offi ces, immersive training suites, classrooms and welfare facilities.

To aid future fl exibility of the new facilities, along with speed of project delivery, the M&E consultant for the project specifi ed a powertrack power distribution system, which will enable easy reconfi guration of the electrical layout should areas of the building be repurposed in the future. Electrical contractor, Highadmit Projects, selected the Betatrak powertrack system from CMD Ltd, installing the system at every level along with CMD’s fl oor boxes, grommets and cleaner’s hives.

Jonathan Duguay, Project Manager at Highadmit Projects, explained: “We have worked with CMD on various South Wales Police installations and know that we can trust them

to respond to any specifi cation questions we may have with a high level of expertise, and to supply the right components on time to help us to keep the programme on schedule.

“We have a rigorous procurement process with suppliers scored on price and the calibre of their quote. Once we had selected the CMD product, the detailed design for the electrical installation was carried out in-house by our team.”

CMD’s 63A Betatrak powertrack system is easy to install and offers excellent fl exibility for creating the required layouts, with the ability to install tap-offs for local access to power every 30cm anywhere on the network. This allows tap-offs to be relocated or additional tap-offs to be added as needs change, providing South Wales Police with a building that can be remodelled quickly and easily.

The Highadmit Projects team has installed the Betatrak within the raised access fl oor, to provide a power distribution network at each level.

“The Betatrak system is modular,” Duguay continued, “with sections of the system simply connecting together in the required layout. It is available in four different lengths - 1.2 metres, 1.8 metres, 2.4 metres and 3.6 metres - which enabled us to specify the optimum lengths for each
