LEISURE & RETAIL FACILITIES
soap units, and the refill cartridge can be snapped into place in seconds which means the supply can be quickly replenished to suit the cleaning team.
The Tork PeakServe Continuous Hand Towel Dispenser is also highly suitable for busy retail washrooms because the unit caters for over 1,000 washroom visitors between refills, 600 more than most other dispensers. It can be topped up at any time and it takes just three seconds for a visitor to take out a towel and move on, allowing for a swift throughput.
Besides offering plentiful hand washing products, retail centres also need to implement other measures to keep customers safe when using the washroom. According to the government’s Working Safely during Coronavirus (COVID-19) publication, signs and posters should be displayed to alert people of the need to wash their hands, for example.
The guidance adds that the facilities should be kept well ventilated by means of fans, ducts or from natural ventilation via doors, windows and vents.
Other strategies could also be adopted by retail centres to speed up washroom visits and prevent queueing. For
example, traffic-light systems that show when cubicles are occupied will help to improve the efficiency of washroom visits, while a faster throughput could also be facilitated by replacing the outer doors with partitions. And the removal of all mirrors from the washroom walls will prevent people from lingering for too long at the hand basin.
Early signs reveal that there is a real will among the public to return to the shops. In May 2021 the British Retail Consortium reported a total shopping sales increase of 10% compared with the same month in 2019 – well before COVID-19 hit consumer spending. While this figure incorporated online spend, the growth in online sales fell to 39% in May 2021 compared with a three- month average of 64%.
So, the outlook for shopping centres is positive. But it is crucial that they should continue to strike the right balance between providing safe, clean and well-managed facilities while ensuring that their customers feel welcome and valued.
