shop. We drove back through the countryside, which is lovely here in Vale of the White Horse at this time of year. I’m sure getting outside in nature is good for everyone – me included.

“I try to find new places to go with the people I visit. Last week I looked on the internet and found a little coffee shop in Ashbury, a nearby village that dates back to Medieval times, so we drove over there for a morning coffee. It’s fun to discover new places and have a look around.”

“I wish more people understood what care is really about. More carers need to speak up and tell people what it’s actually like. Maybe if more people knew, there would be queues of people wanting to join the profession,” she concluded.

model for Christian Dior and other big fashion houses – though she is very modest about it. One man was a very senior scientist and extremely clever. I’ve been a carer to quite a few scientists – maybe it’s because this area is not far from Oxford University and some science parks. Another lady I visit used to be teacher at a local private school, and she tells me some great stories about what the girl pupils used to get up to.”

“Today I also visited a couple to make them lunch. I enjoy cooking and I make them different things each week. They like fresh home cooked food – as I do, and they enjoy omelettes, salmon, sausage and mash or baked potatoes. Their family live abroad so I’m someone to chat to about family - and they love to hear about mine.

“He used to be an international salesman so they travelled a lot, and we talk about that. Once they went on the Orient Express and then flew back on Concorde. I thought it was very exciting - though she said the aircraſt was cramped and noisy!

THURSDAY

“Today’s highlight was a visit to the Vale & Downland Museum in Wantage with Chris, a great local history enthusiast. Among many other things, the museum has some exhibits about the Wantage Tramway, the first steam-powered passenger tramway in the UK to run alongside a public road. There’s a replica of a tramcar interior and a video story about a journey on the Tramway. Chris loves to go to the museum to look at the old photographs. He is very knowledgeable, so he teaches me a lot about local history, which I really enjoy.

“I’m researching the possibility of a trip a local railway museum, because that’s another one of Chris’s interests.

FRIDAY

I went to visit one of the ladies I see regularly, but today she seemed a bit down, so I asked if she wanted to go to a local garden centre – and she was delighted.

“I drove us over there and we chatted while looking at the plants and flowers, then had a coffee at the centre’s coffee
