Natasha Salway, Technology Enabled Care Projects Manager for Oysta Technologies, explains why the use of technology in social care in absolutely integral to fixing the issues the industry is facing.
The past few years have had a huge impact on how we as a society value and prioritise our health and care services.
As someone who has worked in Adult Social Care for over 18 years, including 11 specifically in Technology Enabled Care, I believe the use of technology within social care is a must have if we are going to address the critical issues we are facing and provide the best possible service for the people who need us.
Getting the right social care solutions is essential to helping to improve the NHS – you cannot fix one without fixing the other.
‘PEOPLE AT THE HEART
OF CARE’ I was pleased to find this message within the new government white paper, especially the section ‘Focusing on prevention and health promotion to support people to live healthier lives for longer’.
The message for us all is that we need to enable people to continue to keep active, healthy and safe.
We’ve all experienced lockdown: confined to home, banned from socialising and even limited as to the exercise we can take. The Government’s Policy Paper found that due to Covid, levels of physical activity have fallen amongst all of us. This has led to a decrease in strength and balance amongst the over 65s which will lead to an expected additional 250,000 falls and an increased cost of £210m.
This is where technology can help to reverse the trends.
In social care we usually meet our clients to perform an assessment to ascertain their individual needs. Sometimes, we’re the first person within social care to have contact with this individual and they may not know what options are available and to what they are entitled.
