health can be costly to employers, with 14% of people stating they had resigned and 42% had considered resigning due to workplace stress. As a Society, we know how important it is to support mental health in the workplace and have invested in training for senior members of the team to help them identify mental health issues within the workforce. We are also signed up to an employee assistance programme, which staff members have independent confidential access to for advice and counselling.
We support our colleagues by investing in everyone’s careers from day one, and have a strong programme of training and development in place to equip each team member with the necessary qualifications, rewarding achievements by offering increased pay for employees that gain qualifications such as NVQs. To help guide career progression we have a dedicated in-house trainer who develops and delivers bespoke training to support the career development of each and every member of our team.
Skills and support not only increase efficiency, but can sustain high morale and enables colleagues to feel empowered and valued in their roles.
VALUING YOUR TEAM MEMBERS
In a competitive job market where we are also seeing a skills shortage it is important to ensure that staff feel fulfilled and that they are being paid correctly for their hard work and time, the Society is proud to be a living wage employer.
Conducting regular staff satisfaction surveys is one way the Society’s leadership team ensures colleagues are happy in their roles and feel their professional needs are met. The

happier and more looked aſter employees feel, the more likely they are to consider their role a career and not ‘just a job’.
It is important that everyone feels part of a team and that their work is recognised, one way The Society does this is by operating an ‘open door’ policy, with staff encouraged to share ideas or chat through issues with senior staff members whenever they feel the need to. This encourages close working and stronger relationships within the home.
“Creating a supportive working environment is crucial for staff to feel cared for and
can ultimately lead to better employee retention rates.”
Building a capable and dedicated workforce, and nurturing a long-serving team plays a huge part in creating a successful care home. Invest in your staff development, create a welcoming environment, reward long service and support staff wellbeing, and you are bound to see a happy workforce that will deliver long-lasting benefits to your home, its residents, and the wider team.
