Smartening up the washroom

Chris Wakefield, Vice President, European Marketing & Product Development at GOJO Industries-Europe Ltd, discusses how modern technology can ensure washrooms stay welcoming, hygienic and well-stocked.

Modern technology has become such an important part of our lives today that without it, the world would be a radically different place.

Technology plays such a huge part in our daily lives, that it is taken for granted and is no longer the luxury item it once was. Mobile phones, computers, and WiFi, for example, are all now considered ‘basic necessities’, that we cannot imagine our lives without.

Pioneering technology is transforming the way we live and work – across all industries – so it should come as no surprise that innovative businesses are ensuring the washroom is included in the digital revolution. This is good news as it offers products and services that are more sustainable, economical and user-friendly, and which also, ultimately, help lead to health benefits through improved hand hygiene behaviour.

The importance of hand hygiene to our wider health and wellbeing cannot be overstated, yet time and again, research shows that not everybody washes their hands properly when visiting the washroom. Shocking statistics on this subject show that 46% don’t wash their hands long enough to be effective, whilst one in four people don’t wash their hands at all after using the washroom. This issue is compounded when space

is limited, and people face queues for the available facilities.

It is clear then that there is a real need to influence people’s behaviour and make good hand hygiene practices second nature to everyone. Eye-catching signage, posters and notices can be very effective as a prompt, especially at key germ hotspots such as washrooms and waiting areas. Good hand hygiene companies will be able to supply appropriate signage and offer sound advice on the correct and most effective positioning of hand washing and sanitising solutions.

However, to successfully change behaviour, a combination of approaches is required. As well as prominent signage, having the right washroom systems is crucial. Today’s innovative technology can play a key role in this, ensuring facilities are accessible, well-stocked and well- maintained.

All in one

We understand that ‘one size doesn’t fit all’, and today, thanks to manufacturers’ constant innovation, there is a wide range of choice available – even for the smallest washroom.

Installing slim, wall-mounted

dispensers, for example, can be of significant benefit in both aesthetic and practical terms. The best suppliers will have a variety of options and offer advice on which would be best for your individual needs.

Using innovative technology can also play a significant role in improving hand hygiene and perceptions of smaller washrooms. People can be reluctant to touch taps, dispensers and dryers if they don’t look clean or are leaking.

Touch-free dispensers are the perfect solution to this problem and are becoming increasingly popular. Intuitively sensing the presence of hands, they dispense just the right amount of product every time, helping to reduce wastage, and the fact that they are touch-free also increases their hygiene rating.

High-tech formulations

When we talk about innovation in terms of washrooms, we usually think of ‘digital technology’ such as WiFi-enabled machines, revolutionary dispensers, and inventions like self- cleaning toilet seats.

However, innovation comes in all shapes and forms, and a lot of research and development is also
