Illuminating insight

Here, Diversey sheds new light on healthcare disinfection.

Cleaning teams have access to a formidable array of products and tools in their ongoing fight against infections in hospitals and other healthcare settings.

The latest technology to emerge uses powerful UV-C light to disinfect surfaces quickly and effectively. It works because high-intensity UV-C penetrates and destroys the DNA in the cells of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and spores which stops them multiplying and causing infections.

Diversey has applied UV-C in Moonbeam3 and SKY 7Xi, two innovative pieces of equipment so that facilities have a completely hands, chemical and fume-free way to complement existing processes with safer high- performance disinfection.

Moonbeam3 delivers powerful UV-C light to provide fast, broad area disinfection of high-touch surfaces in hospitals and care homes in as little as three minutes. This is much faster than fogging and almost twice as effective as traditional cleaning and disinfection alone in destroying the pathogens that cause healthcare associated infections (HAIs).

The UV-C device is ideal for adjunct cleaning of surfaces accidentally missed during regular disinfection processes and for frequently-touched, hard-to-clean surfaces and intricate equipment. It can be used in patient rooms, operating theatres, bathrooms and on patient care equipment, keyboards, monitors, and workstations. Periodic maintenance is limited to bulb replacement, with no tools required.

The unique design of Moonbeam3, with its articulating arms, small size and portability, allows it to be used in more places while its high-efficiency dosing minimises disinfection cycle times, reducing labour and operating costs. Push-button activation and short operating cycles make it quick and easy to use.

Its three articulating, light-producing arms can be positioned independently, close to the target surface and in the optimum orientation to ensure the maximum amount of light hits surfaces perpendicularly. These

features help maximise the infection-prevention capabilities of the unit.

In contrast, most if not all other systems available have UV-C sources mounted on a single, central column that is not easily repositioned. That means the source is often further away from the target surfaces and less UV-C falls on them at right angles, making them less efficient.

Moonbeam3 incorporates powerful fail-safe motion sensors on the unit as well as on the cover designed to prevent accidental exposure to UV-C. The control unit is placed outside the door and has sensors on it so that it shuts off as soon as it is moved. If that is bypassed then the motion sensors on the unit are the additional safety features which will shut down as soon as there is any movement.

SKY 7Xi is an innovative unit that utilises powerful UV-C to disinfect portable devices such as tablets, smartphones and medical equipment quickly and easily without fumes or chemicals. It offers up to 99.999% (log 5) reduction of a wide range of harmful pathogens including MRSA, norovirus and C diff spores.

Mobile devices are the ultimate frequent-touch surfaces that can lead to the rapid spread of infections in medical settings. Frequent disinfection helps break the chain to reduce the risk of pathogens being passed from person to person.

SKY 7Xi delivers high-intensity UV-C in close proximity and on all sides of the device being disinfected. The unit can be positioned on desks, walls, mobile trolleys and other locations for convenience and accessibility. The unit is designed and shielded so that the UV-C is always contained completely within to eliminate any risk of external exposure.

Healthcare workers can disinfect their portable devices on demand in as little at 30 seconds with little or no disruption to their routine. They simply place their item inside the unit and the disinfection cycle starts automatically. The unit accommodates items up 2.54cm thick by 20.3cm wide and 30.5cm long.
