Caroline Hutchins, Operations Director at Julius Rutherfoord & Co, outlines best practice that protects people and places.

From zero waste to landfill measures, to climate change, not a day goes by when there isn’t a headline about the importance of sustainability to our planet, and rightly so.

Green thinking is fundamental to every business. In fact, the latest Sustainability Survey from the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management, indicates that 91% of facilities managers rated it either important, very important or extremely important.

As well as reducing carbon footprints and saving resources, a healthy environment is essential to keeping people and places safe and secure. Additionally, organisations are increasingly considering how the services they commission and procure will provide social value, helping to improve an area’s economic, social and environmental wellbeing.

It’s crucial that companies which say they are working sustainably can prove it in a clear, accurate way. Facilities managers should expect the following from companies they outsource services to:

A meaningful approach

An intelligent, flexible approach to sustainability is important as each facility is unique and has different environmental priorities, in addition to other business requirements.

Measures should be relevant to a client site, environment and culture, be proven and trialled before implementation, considered for cost versus sustainable performance, appropriatly sized and scaled, and have a measurable impact.

Standard measures

There are a wealth of independent standards and accreditations you should check your provider holds – and verification is key. The best cleaning contractors earn recognised environmental accreditations, such as Carbon Smart certification, and have rigid adherence to an ISO14001 environmental management system, among other credentials. They should also work with suppliers who have a similar environmental ethos and proven capabilities.

Education

It’s important that cleaning service providers are up-to- date with environmentally-friendly procedures and best practice. Providers must demonstrate investment in training and education accredited by independent, reputable organisations like the British Institute of Cleaning Science – not just at the start of a cleaning operative’s career, but as an ongoing process.

Environmentally equipped

As well as alternatives to traditional cleaning chemicals, the best commercial cleaners will have a repertoire of green

tools in their tool kit, including pure water systems that use ionised water for highly effective window cleaning results, microfibre cloths, diamond- encrusted cleaning pads, and eco cleaning machines which reduce or even eliminate the need to use chemicals.

Technology

Even the best people can only work effectively if they have the right technology and systems to support them. Advancements in machinery, products and technologies mean that more can be reused and recycled, and environmentally friendly methods can be used in every business sector, whilst maintaining the highest standards of cleaning and facilities management.

For example, pulse mopping systems can be used to clean more square feet in less time, whilst eliminating water wastage. Biotechnology cleaning products provide superior performance whilst being cost-effective, safe, and responsible to the environment. Contract management apps reduce the need for paper and can be used to measure sustainable performance in real time.

Measurement

Integrity and transparency are the key principles of best practice in sustainability for facilities managers. It’s important that companies to which you outsource services have impeccable green standards and work with you to implement environmental initiatives.

Monthly reporting should outline results such as recycling volumes collected, percentage recycled, and CO2

saved.

Clear measurement and a partnership approach can help both parties reach sustainability goals and boosts the reputational status of the facility being serviced as a true champion of best practice.
