A throwaway solution

Can you truly go ‘green’ if you’re using disposables? Chicopee – a brand of Berry Global – investigates.

At first glance, the use of disposable cloths may appear at odds with a sustainable regime: however, not only do short-term use cloths eradicate the danger of cross- contamination, they remove the need for laundry and, in turn, the associated use and cost of water and chemicals.

As environmentally friendly cleaning materials continue to evolve, managers find themselves with a greater choice than ever. With a wide range of ‘green’ cleaning chemicals and bin liners already being adopted in the cleaning industry, is it not time for a ‘green’ cloth to be added to that list?

And while the term ‘disposable’ is not usually associated with environmentally friendly practices, if you can use sustainable materials that are fully biodegradable and compostable, then you can eradicate landfill waste and make use of your green food bin for such products – thus, moving in the direction of a circular economy.

Chicopee has developed the only colour-coded, biodegradable and compostable cleaning cloth, designed to not compromise on the need for colour coding and disposability: a pre-requisite for the hospitality industry, while still providing the required performance to protect against the spread of harmful bacteria. The innovative J-Cloth Plus Biodegradable, which has been nominated for and won multiple awards, and at the time of writing, is currently a Tomorrow’s Cleaning Award 2019 finalist.

The first and only compostable, biodegradable and Food Contact Clearance (FCC) approved colour-coded cloth on the market, its design is based on the world-renowned

60 | SUSTAINABILITY

J-Cloth Plus. It provides an efficient clean every time, while its distinctive, easy to rinse structure means it stays fresher for longer. Its unique, open, wavy texture enables efficient pick-up of any dirt and makes it easy to rinse, ensuring longer freshness.

Poor quality disposable cloths increase consumption and in turn lead to increasing landfill, harming the environment and contributing to higher waste disposal requirements and additional costs. When inferior cloths are used for longer periods, they are also difficult to keep clean and rinse, which wastes time and allows odours to develop.

Unlike other cloths, the J-Cloth Plus Biodegradable is, as the name suggests, fully compostable and biodegradable. Some tests in external laboratories show the cloth conforms to all the relevant DIN standards and the product carries the seedling logo, granted by DIN-Certco, as proof of its green credentials.

J-Cloth Plus Biodegradable cloths are also fully compliant with the rules and regulations of the European Parliament on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, which means they are completely safe to use when they directly or indirectly come into contact with dry, moist or fatty foodstuffs.

Chicopee is committed to developing innovative cleaning solutions that are durable, high performing and consider the full life cycle analysis.
