Why it’s time for me to brush up on my timekeeping…

The British Cleaning Council’s Deputy Chair, Paul Thrupp, highlights why for him, The Cleaning Show is more than just another trade event.

It’s nearly time for The Cleaning Show, which means I will be once again polishing my stopwatch and re-reading my Guinness World Records rule book.

That’s because with my Federation of Window Cleaners’ hat on, I am an official adjudicator for the Window Cleaning Championships and responsible for timing competitors who are trying to break the Guinness World Record for the globe’s quickest window cleaner. The fastest ‘shiners’ each day will also walk away with £1,000 each so if you do fancy your chances, I’d suggest you get on with some training sharpish.

We have also tweaked the competition this year and have introduced a new element – the Window Cleaning World Cup – and our head of PR (who by the way is also speaking at the Cleaning Show) informs me we’ve already had exposure for the event in Australia, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, New Zealand and across the Middle East.

Whether this attracts more global entrants is yet to be seen, but if there are armies of squeegee-wielding Finns, chamois-clutching Kiwis and waterpole waving Russians amassed inside Excel, now you know why.

In between my Guinness World Record duties, some of the other things I’m looking forward to at the show include demonstrations of the latest cleaning kit. We’re being promised quite a few exclusive ‘first looks’ at a number of products from around the world, and it’s fantastic that The Cleaning Show is seen as an influential platform for the launch of equipment.

It’s also encouraging that the UK is seen as a key market where innovation and new ways of working are warmly welcomed.

Talking of innovation, another highlight of the London show is always the Innovation Awards. These are a series of prizes for the best products and services being exhibited at the show, judged by a panel of senior industry figures (and, for some unknown reason, me as well).

The winners will be announced at 4.30pm on the first day of the show – meaning those who are successful can spend the next two days highlighting their achievements to potential new customers, as well as revelling in the glory of winning such a prestigious title.

In terms of the speaker programme there’s loads to check out, with expert talks from right across the cleaning, hygiene and FM spectrum. There are also some excellent discussion panels (which from memory can get quite lively), and several keynote presentations from some of the industry’s leading influencers.

One of these will be Steve Ashkin, the USA’s top green cleaning guru, and the BCC was lucky enough get an exclusive interview with Steve for its bi-annual magazine, The Voice. The same edition also features articles on a great environmental initiative being launched by three BCC members, details of a special BCC-funded workshop specifically for domestic cleaning business owners, plus a sneak preview of the BCC’s latest industry research into the cleaning, waste and FM sectors.

If you are attending the show you should be able to pick up a copy of The Voice when you arrive, but if you can’t then please do swing by the BCC’s stand (C40) and pick one up. For those not attending, an electronic version will be posted on the BCC website soon after the event.

There’s so much more I could say about The Cleaning Show – which is co-produced by the BCC – but alas there is not enough room here to do it justice. However, a little bird did tell me that this very magazine is covering the event in greater detail this month. You can also visit the Cleaning Show’s website for all the information on exhibitors, speakers and how to get a free ticket for the three-day expo.

I look forward to seeing you there.
