10 Questions with... Daniel Cross

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Daniel Cross, UK Business Marketing Manager at Vaclensa (part of Tennant Group).

1 2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was a glass collector in a local pub: a great

way to start my working life because from day one I was interacting and speaking directly with customers.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

As a marketing professional, most of my career has been within the construction industry. In 2015 I re-trained as a teacher, but after a few years I decided it wasn’t for me. When I decided to return to a marketing career, the role at Vaclensa seemed the most interesting challenge as I’d never worked in or with a client from the cleaning industry before.

3 4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

“Big picture thinker”.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

The only places left on my ‘must visit’ list are Hawaii and a trip to the North pole, but out of the two, probably Hawaii first.

Being trained on how to properly use the required machines and equipment can have a massive impact on time, the cost, and the customer experience.

6 7

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD

GIVE THEM? Don’t be afraid to fail, as long as you try. You learn from your mistakes and failures, especially in a marketing role, and this is ultimately beneficial going forward.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

I’d like to help people and do something for charity but I think I’d have to treat myself first. I absolutely love Poland, especially Krakow, and I’d have to buy myself a nice apartment near the old town for holidays.

8 9

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO

WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? David Ogilvy, a legend in the marketing world and I’d love to hear what advice he could give me. Christopher Reeve as I’m a Superman fan and I’d love to talk about his films and thoughts on the character. Finally, Moby: I’ve been a huge fan since the early ‘90s and I could get him to play a full live set.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I think there is a growing progression to more eco-friendly and sustainable innovations, something which we have been committed to for several years through our internal sustainable Enterprise team.

Alex Blake, Business Development Director at ABM Critical Solutions, asks:

10 5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I think the industry is in a good place at the moment but things can always be improved and become more effective through education and training. I’ve heard people from outside our industry talk about how easy the role of a cleaning operative is but they don’t know the full story.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BIGGEST SOURCES OF PRESSURE ON CLEANING

BUSINESSES IN THE UK AT THE MOMENT? If I had to pick one I’d say Brexit. There’s still a lot of uncertainty about the end result but quite rightly individuals and businesses are very worried. I have the same concerns working for a global company with a strong link to Europe but we have a well-structured plan in place which covers any outcome.
