Award and reward for the cleaning industry


Following the honour of being gifted the Royal Charter, the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC) has spent several years – with the support of the Privy Council – developing the Award of ‘Chartered Environmental Cleaner’, in recognition of individual achievements and professionalism in Cleaning and associated sectors.


It’s clear that we are in an industry in which you can leave school without any qualifications and, after starting out as a cleaner, can become the owner of a highly successful multi- million-pound company.


The Chartered Environmental Cleaner Award is the opportunity to recognise this, and demonstrate those worthy of such accolades. There’s no longer a need to find yourself sitting in an important meeting or around the Boardroom table with Chartered Accountants and others with their accreditations, without your own justifiably Chartered status anymore.


It's not a course of study, nor is it a qualification, but the story of an individual and their cleaning career journey. In time it will become aspirational as an ‘award of excellence’ for junior managers in cleaning, and also for those in allied professions and the associated sectors of our industry. Recruiters are already considering having this in their future selection criteria.


This is not just applicable to operational managers but also for all senior managers and colleagues in support services roles with a desire to be acknowledged, those in allied professions in the supply chain, as well as manufacturers and distributors.


This Chartered Status for senior members across all of FM, cleaning and associated industries has gained significant attention following the launch in November 2021. It is a valuable reminder that this is not only an Award for the WCEC but will have global recognition. Interest has already

come from far and wide, with approaches from across Europe and as far reaching as the Middle East and Africa.


The Award There are two routes to follow:


If an individual already holds Chartered status in another profession or has a degree (in any subject), then they can take the ‘Standard route’. This involves presenting themselves in an interview – held virtually – with the CPR Committee to demonstrate how they meet the criteria across the five elements: their competence in General Knowledge; Practical Skills; Communication; Leadership; and Professional Commitment.


For others, and probably the majority of applicants, there is the ‘Individual pathway’ where they produce a submission of up to 10,000 words providing evidence of how they comply with the various statements across these same five elements. This is a story of personal achievements which many have found the hardest part when writing about themselves as ‘I’ and not ‘we’.


This recognition of experience and professionalism will allow individuals to display the post nominals C.Env.Cln for their achievement.


Twice Master of the WCEC, Barrie P Torbett, C.Env.Cln, commented: “It’s up to us now to take this initiative forward and prove to the industry and the outside world that our vision has great value, and should be one of the key foundations that underpins professionalism within our sector.”
