Shining a spotlight on the winners

After two years away due to the pandemic, the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards returned in April, with the winners revealed in Brussels. Michelle Marshall, Founder of the event and editor of European Cleaning Journal, reveals what wowed the judges this year.

At the time of writing, we’re still on a high from a fantastic awards event in Brussels. Not only was this a record year for entries, it was also our best attended event yet.

After living through two very challenging years due to COVID-19, it was brilliant to be able to bring everyone back together and recognise our sector, which has played a central role throughout the pandemic, and of course celebrate our finalists and reveal those all-important winners.

Our first award of the night was the Best Use of Smart Solutions by Service Providers category, which allows entrants to show how they have embraced the latest IT- based tech and systems. Principle Cleaning took home this prize for ‘PSC Connect’ at Landsec Dashwood House, which takes into account many different aspects of Principle's day-to-day operations – a genuinely useful tool that brings tangible benefits for clients and staff.

Our second award – Investment in Training – went to Breedweer Facilitaire Diensten, thanks to their commitment to making an impact rather than profit, and offering truly meaningful and far-reaching opportunities to learn. Breedweer, who source over 39% of their employees from disadvantaged groups, also took home our Commitment to Diversity award.

Next up was the Excellence in Client-Contractor Relationships award. Incentive FM took home the top prize for their work with Beaumont Leys Shopping Centre. Together, they’ve worked extremely closely on some great initiatives such as mutual investment and collaborative training.

New for this year was our Start-up of the Year award and we were delighted to hand out a trophy to TRU Cleanroom Cleaning. From the outset, founder Vanessa Morini had a passion and clear vision for what she wanted to achieve. She identified the potential in the market for cleanroom services and has successfully established her company in that sector.

Our Sustainability – Best Practice award recognises those who have made a lifelong commitment to operate in the

most sustainable way. Five companies made the shortlist for this award, but we couldn’t pick just one winner. Both Essity and Momentum Support took home a prize.

This year’s Best Initiative Raising the Profile of the Cleaning Sector award went to ANIP Confindustria for their ‘In Good Hands’ campaign, which recognised the work of the cleaning sector throughout the pandemic, was adopted by EFCI, and became very successful on social media.

We also gave out two gongs in the Technological Innovation of the Year category. Our judges loved the innovative ideas from LionsBot (for their LeoBot app, which allows cleaners to manage a whole fleet of LionsBot robot cleaners) and Gausium (for their ECOBOT Scrubber 50 Pro, which delivers dynamic mapping, patrol cleaning, communication with elevators, and four-stage filtration for optimum water usage).

Our Leader of the Year award went to Dominic Ponniah of Cleanology. Not only highly respected by his colleagues and clients, Dominic also promotes and represents the cleaning industry to the world at large. He has created a culture of empowerment and excellence within his team.

Our final award was the Rising Star category, which went to Martina Alexandrino at Principle Cleaning Services. Having started as a cleaning operative, Martina is now rising through the management ranks at Principle and she still has potential to rise further.

We were delighted to celebrate these outstanding companies and individuals who do so much for our industry. A huge thank you to all that entered, attended, sponsored and supported – we couldn’t have done it without you.

This year’s sponsors included Boma, Ceris Burns International, Kärcher, Tork, Interclean, Jangro, Greenspeed, Truvox International, Vectair Systems, i-Team, Vermop and LionsBot International. Tomorrow’s Cleaning was a Media Partner.
