Enhancing the bottom line

John Goetz, Global Product Manager at Hydro Systems, contends that a real-time system receiving operational data as it occurs is key to improving efficiency, reducing costs and quickly identifying problems in a laundry operation.

In an industry defined by tight margins, optimum efficiency is paramount. For a laundry manager, selecting the right chemical dispensing system is only the start. Maintaining a competitive edge requires a clear understanding of the evolution of technology and the impact this is having on laundry operations. Laundry managers can’t be onsite 24/7, so investing in a smart, automated chemical dispensing system is essential.

Many laundries still rely upon historical reports or hand-written logs to detail information on productivity, chemical usage, and volume of loads, costs and alarms. When using such methods, by the time a problem is found, hours, shifts or even days of loss-making may have passed. Being able to automatically assess these KPIs quickly and seamlessly enhances the total cost-effectiveness of a laundry’s wash aisle. Immediate access to data enables proactive adjustments to be made and improves visibility of how performance expectations are being met, all the while reducing errors, minimising downtime and protecting the bottom line.

Solving real business problems

Hydro Connect is Hydro Systems’ cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) platform that sends and receives data in real time, and is designed to give chemical providers and end users increased visibility into their operations, optimise production, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction.

Built on the Microsoft Azure platform, Hydro Connect works with Dositec Central Dosing Systems, which are designed to optimise chemical dispensing to large tunnel washers or multiple washer extractors. Data transmits from these units to the Hydro Connect system using a cellular modem and a monthly data package.

Hydro Connect offers game-changing insights including:

• Alarm reporting: Proactively view alarms to rapidly eliminate abnormal conditions that drive profit loss.

• Production: Eliminate the use of out-of-date paper logs to document the number of pounds or loads run in a facility.

• Chemical usage: Simplify and improve the accuracy of billing procedures with metered usage reports on chemical product and formula.

• Cost: Quickly access a snapshot of the chemical cost by formula to actively manage and improve unprofitable formulas or accounts.

• Observations/recommendations: Eliminate hours of data manipulation and analysis with Hydro experts available to review monthly data and provide recommendations to reduce rewash and optimise cleaning results.

These tools in turn allow Hydro Connect’s customers to digitally transform their operations, with enhanced visibility enabling them to cut costs, reduce rewash and deliver consistent, reliable results.

Until recently, few manufacturers offered this type of system, driving up costs, limiting innovation and customer service. Hydro Systems’ customer – Walter E. Nelson, a chemical distributor in the United States – has grown its industrial laundry business using Dositec Laundry Systems to reduce chemical dispensing labour and equipment maintenance costs by approximately 80%.

Delivering new efficiencies

Hydro Systems has recently introduced its Hydro Connect Real-Time Module, which delivers new capabilities to further improve efficiencies. This solution allows ongoing data streaming to the Hydro Connect cloud and can be retrofitted to existing Dositec systems. There’s no guesswork about which formula is running, success of each chemical delivery, or whether hygiene compliance is being met.

Users can set alarm thresholds to receive notifications if one or more are triggered. This allows laundries to reduce downtime and rewash rates while addressing larger issues that can impact profitability.

Scalable solutions across multiple cleaning environments; a proven, reliable and secure platform and enhanced knowledge to help business operations, are evidence of the essential flexibility of the Hydro Connect Real-Time Module. This makes it a valuable tool for both tactical, day- to-day monitoring and monthly management summaries. An exciting prospect for the future is that connected chemical dispensers still have room to evolve, such as providing predictive maintenance through data analysis and recommending intervention before issues arise.

Hydro Connect helps laundry operators and chemical suppliers run their businesses more efficiently, cutting back on wasted product, emergency maintenance calls and expensive repairs while supporting long-term sustainability targets.
