https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-48596775 Responsible resources Here, Cromwell Polythene discuss their vision for a sustainable future.

In September we’ll be showcasing our extensive portfolio of products for the capture and containment of resources and waste, including recycled polythene sacks, compostable liners, reusable bags and more, at RWM 2019. We hope that you’ll be able to visit us on Stand O14 to find out more about our products, which are designed to make the world cleaner, greener and more economical.

We all want to progress towards a more sustainable future, with increased recycling and re-use to keep materials in our economy and further initiatives to reduce energy. I’m encouraged by the cooperation between different industry sectors in response to recent government consultations for its Resources and Waste Strategy for England. It’s vitally important that we work together to find solutions to our waste and recycling challenges, and at the same time, combat climate change and help achieve the circular economy vision, keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible.

Responsibly produced plastic packaging can offer so many solutions to help mitigate the effects of a changing climate, for example significantly reducing food waste. The lightweight characteristics of plastics is also key, reducing HGV journeys and fuel consumption and resulting in corresponding emission reductions.

Our LowCO2 t products, for example, are engineered to

provide maximum performance using minimal resources. This not only helps to reduce the volume of plastic used and the energy used in manufacturing, but also to minimise greenhouse gas emissions in transportation through the supply chain. We’ll be launching three new additions to this range at RWM, extending it to incorporate green, red and blue sacks.

These are a great visual reminder to help in the separation of different materials for recycling.

We are also the sole UK distributor for compostable bags made from Ecopond biodegradable resin to the janitorial industry, local authorities and the UK’s waste management sector.

Using plastic waste sacks and bags is the simplest and most cost-effective way to encourage people to safely and hygienically separate and collect waste effectively, to return valuable resources to the circular economy, or for appropriate disposal.

“We’re looking forward to connecting with businesses,

recycling, and local authority professionals at RWM.”

Plastic packaging can have a high recycled content – up to 100% – and can be reprocessed many times, not only saving virgin material but associated energy as well. Where this is not practical, the calorific value can be recovered to generate electricity or heat at the end of their useful life, through energy from waste (EfW) plants.

As a member of the British Plastics Federation, we support WRAP’s UK Plastics Pact which has outlined an ambitious set of targets to create a circular economy for plastics. The aim is to eliminate all avoidable plastic packaging waste and make all plastic packaging reusable, recyclable, recycled, or compostable by 2025.

The government has outlined plans to set a 2050 target of ‘net zero’ greenhouse gas emissions. Using resources efficiently depends upon the engagement of everyone, and different sectors working together to find solutions to challenges, to protect against climate change. That’s why we’re looking forward to connecting with businesses, recycling, and local authority professionals at RWM, as we all look to build long-term, beneficial working relationships and develop pioneering recycling and waste management innovations that are designed to protect our planet’s future.
