ECOWARRIORS Next generation

Solent Infant School’s students want to change the world, one packet at a time. From the mouths of babes

Solent Infant School sits on the southern slopes of Portsdown Hill, to the north of the City of Portsmouth, in the Drayton and Farlington Ward. The School provides a broad, balanced curriculum which encompasses the core and foundation subjects of the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception Year) and Key Stage I (Years 1 and 2). It is a purpose built, three form entry Infant School, in an exciting but highly practical building which opened in October 1994, and won the best new building in Portsmouth award in 1995.

The building is bright and airy and provides a very pleasant learning environment. The outdoor environment is well planned and offers many opportunities to extend the classroom out into the play areas. Much of the learning that takes place is theme-based and set in engaging contexts that interest and inspire pupils and their families.

One of these themes is sustainability. As Mrs Emma Curthoys, Head of School, commented: “As a school, we believe strongly that teaching children about their environmental impact from a young age will ensure that they help to look after it as they grow up. However, with the television coverage and resulting awareness over the last 12-18 months, the children are also pushing us to help them ‘protect the environment’.”

The Great Big Clean Up

The school has a team of ‘Eco Warriors’, represented in each class, and their role is to champion environmental actions in their class, to help reduce their footprint whilst raising money for the school at the same time. The Eco Warriors are helping to spread the message by collecting:

• Used biscuit wrappers/cake wrappers. • All brands of crisp wrappers.

• Personal care and beauty products (e.g. facial wipe packaging, caps, flexible plastic tubes and roll-on deodorants).

• Trigger heads (Flash, hand soap etc), washing up liquid and home cleaning bottle tops, and fabric.

• All brands of toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrush outer packaging, toothbrushes and electric toothbrushes.

• Any kind of pen tippex bottles (empty). • Used stamps and ink cartridges.
