Celebrating Success

Paul Thrupp congratulates two very different British Cleaning Council (BCC) members as they celebrate significant anniversaries.

When you first talk to people who aren't familiar with the BCC about the diversity of our membership, they usually react in a similar way.

Firstly, they will say something like ‘I had no idea that wheelie bin washers had their own trade association’ followed by ‘but what do they all have in common?’

Answering the second point is actually easy as all members share a commitment across every facet of the cleaning, waste and hygiene sectors to raising professional standards, better health and wellbeing for operatives, improved training and promoting a positive image of the cleaning industry.

However, the sheer breadth of specialisations found within the Council’s membership can still on occasion make me stop and think about the very different things they all do, and two recent member milestones really brought this home to me.

The first was the 30th anniversary of The Association of Building Cleaning DSPs (ABCD) – the membership association for managers of local authority cleaning, support services and suppliers. They celebrated with a special event at the Houses of Parliament hosted by Jim Fitzpatrick MP (Poplar and Limehouse), who is a big supporter of the commercial cleaning industry.

Jim took the opportunity to speak about the value of public cleaning, and the vital role which the ABCD plays, before helping to present the ABCD’s annual awards.

What really struck me about these ABCD awards was that a new category had been created especially for the anniversary, 'The Award for Innovations to deal with Austerity in Local Authorities', sponsored by the BCC.

To see ‘Austerity’ in a formal awards title was a first for me, highlighting to me the fact that public sector cleaning operatives have faced years of unprecedented budget cuts, increased competition and new, complex procurement rules.

This means they are having to do more with less, working much harder to retain existing clients and are needing to innovate to win new ones.

If you’re not involved in public sector cleaning, you probably don’t realise quite how tough it’s been for ABCD members – so, hearty congratulations to the winners and the highly

Another BCC member also enjoyed a significant birthday recently – The Domestic Cleaning Alliance (DCA).

Founded in 2014 by Stephen Munton, himself a domestic cleaner, the DCA’s mission is to support the needs of the people and businesses that provide cleaning services within other peoples’ homes.

Services and benefits they offer members include domestic cleaning training, advice on running a cleaning business, discounts on supplies, equipment and insurance, plus peer- to-peer networking opportunities.

Stephen started the DCA after he founded his own cleaning business in 2003, when he found the UK domestic cleaning industry fragmented and unregulated. With no shared standards regarding what a service should offer, what service levels to work to, and what the client should expect, Stephen decided a level playing field with industry benchmarks and guidelines was needed.

From humble beginnings the DCA is now a credible, highly respected, and rapidly growing trade organisation. It’s adding real value and bringing rigour to a sector predicted to explode over the coming years. We would like to warmly congratulate Stephen and his members on reaching their fifth anniversary, and we thank him for sharing some of the DCA’s excellent birthday cake at a recent Council meeting.

Beyond the balloons and party poppers, I’m very proud that two different, yet equally vital, cleaning organisations are part of the Council, and the fact they are part of a cohort of over 20 authoritative trade bodies which make up the BCC membership.

So, whether you’re interested in contract cleaning or waste management, carpet cleaning or cleaning supplies, pest control or housekeeping, training providers or machine manufacturers, chemical suppliers or window cleaners, environmental health or litter, the BCC really has got it covered.
