CONTRACT CLEANING
KEY COMPONENTS
TC Facilities Management (TCFM) has recently secured a deal to implement an FM solution to RS Components’ 16 sites across the UK. Here, we learn how they took on this challenge.
Having served engineers and procurement specialists for more than 75 years, RS Components prides itself on being a leading high-service distributor of electronics, automation and control components, tools and consumables, serving more than one million customers globally. This is where their Distribution Centres (DCs) and Trade Counters are critical. Their complex in Corby, comprising both offices and a DC, is where more than 3,000 staff work and from where more than 130,000 technical products are distributed.
As part of an FM solution to RS Components, TC Facilities Management (TCFM) had been charged with delivering cleaning services, alongside grounds maintenance, catering, specialist cleaning and surveillance to not only its Corby site, but to 16 sites across the UK – with almost 3 million ft² across two DCs.
As one of the leading independent FM companies in the UK, TCFM boasts more than 50 years’ experience of delivering services nationally, and are now associated with some of the biggest names on the high street, as well as providing FM services to DCs across the UK. This means that they were expertly poised to provide RS Components with the services they desired. Here, they tell us how they rose to the challenge:
THE CHALLENGE We know that maintaining safety and cleanliness in any working environment is critical, particularly

in the manufacturing and packing of products for distribution. RS Components’ promise to the engineers it serves is to deliver high-quality parts on time and on budget. Keeping the two DCs and their 14 trade counters working smoothly to deliver this promise every time is paramount.
THE APPROACH To meet the challenge highlighted, a well-rounded and innovative solution, using our tried and tested knowledge and skills was required. This included working with the team at RS Components to gain an understanding of their culture, processes and production optimisation. Through this we were then able to apply these understandings to ongoing safety training along with the use of the most current technology and equipment and our talent management process.
A dedicated management team of experts from TCFM was put in place to ensure that all services were delivered to mutually agreed goals in accordance with operational requirements of the RS Components.
Executing the approach was required in less than four weeks from contract award, demonstrating our ability to implement our onboarding and training to deliver the effective work environment that RS Components needed. In particular our face-to-face TUPE meetings were used to inform staff of our training, development and performance management processes, along with our pioneering Animated Tool Box Talks to reinforce pertinent
safety tips and review safety practices specific to the day’s events.
THE OUTCOME By combining our proven facility services processes, the most current technology and the right people on the ground, we have been able to create an effective work environment to enable better quality and continued productivity gains, and with it help RS Components achieve its promise to deliver high- quality parts on time and on budget.
Some of the key highlights of what we have been able to achieve to date are the immediate raising of standards on cleaning, TC Security Services’ approach to Innovation and Technology to minimise risk and protect assets, and greater cost efficiencies for our client.
Steve Wengrow, Divisional Director at TCFM, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract with RS Components and are looking forward to demonstrating our ingenuity and use of technology resources. This will complement and support RS Components in bringing to life their commitment of providing good products and value-added services to the engineers they serve.”
Other contracts awarded to TCFM have included providing services to Tesco’s largest operation in Europe, based in Livingston, Scotland: a site that is more than 2 million ft² in size, services over 620 stores and operates 365 days a year with up to 1,800 staff.
