Tork PaperCircle by Essity

Demand is growing for sustainable solutions that increase the number of times that fibres can be reused. At the same time, disposable towels have become increasingly popular in public washrooms because they’re practical, convenient, and versatile. Paper towels can also act as a barrier when opening washroom doors and using taps – a benefit that resonated strongly with the public during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tork manufacturer Essity has launched the world’s first recycling service for paper towels to help customers enhance their sustainability credentials. Tork PaperCircle was first piloted in continental Europe and became available in Britain in late 2021. Among the first UK companies to sign up for the service was multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, creator of one of the world’s leading COVID-19 vaccines.

Customers signing up to Tork PaperCircle have their used paper hand towels picked up by Essity partners and taken to local mills where they’re turned into new tissue products.

Customers’ washrooms are equipped with paper towel recycling bins with clear signage directing people how to use them. Signs on the back of toilet cubicle doors introduce visitors to the concept, and clear signs throughout the washroom direct visitors to the water supply, soap, and paper towel recycling receptacle. The bin for general refuse is marked with a contrasting sign.

Paper hand towels are usually handled as household waste and ultimately combusted. Essity recently partnered with commercial waste company Recorra to ensure a smooth collection service from customers’ sites and a swift return to mills for recycling.

Tork PaperCircle is going from strength to strength and is available in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Denmark, and the UK. It’s helping customers reduce their environmental footprint by 40% by creating a closed loop system for used washroom hand towels.

The service has won multiple awards including an Interclean Amsterdam Innovation Award and Visitor’s Choice Award, and a European Cleaning and Hygiene Best Practice-Sustainability Award.
