Transforming training on a global scale
The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) discusses taking training to the next level.
As targeted training continues to drive standards worldwide within the cleaning and hygiene industry, digital courses are increasingly improving education and efficiencies.
Raising standards within the sector globally through expert-led training is industry leader BICSc, whose mission is to educate, inform, and train cleaning operatives to the highest standards. Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to making training accessible to all, BICSc announced an expansion to its free training courses, available via its virtual training online offering.
These complementary courses are designed to either ease candidates back into training, who may not have been in a learning environment for many years, or alternatively provide a bite-sized introduction to training for cleaning operatives joining the sector.
Neil Spencer-Cook, MBICSc, BICSc Chief Operating Officer, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer such a range of informative, insightful courses which are completely free for candidates. It demonstrates how the institute invests in people and values cleaning operatives worldwide, by offering such a selection of courses free and accessible to all.”
Within the BICSc collection of comprehensive Cleanlogic courses, there are an array of free courses, including:
• Understanding Chemical Hazard Pictograms • Understanding Colour-Coding • Understanding PPE • CPSS Assessor app user guide • Hand Hygiene Explained
Since launching its online offering of virtual training courses, BICSc has had an unprecedented industry response with more than 14,000 enrolments to date, demonstrating the rising requirement for digital training.
Spencer-Cook highlights how providing training via online options is helping to transform training within the sector. Benefits include allowing candidates to learn at their own pace and to arrange their educational sessions around their lifestyle and work commitments.
Neil added: “Businesses benefit because virtual training eliminates the need for candidates to be out of the business for significant periods of time. Having training courses accessible online offers greater flexibility all round. Candidates are often more comfortable learning at their own pace and can return to revisit courses online at any time.”
Alongside complimentary courses on offer, BICSc announced the introduction of its latest course:
38 | TRAINING AND EDUCATION
‘Understanding the NHS Technical Cleaning Audit’. The new course has been introduced in response to requests by members of the cleaning community following NHS England’s 2021 launch of a new national standard, which included a new system for technical audits.
The industry-leading course is designed to explain the purpose and process of the NHS technical audit to cleaning operatives, to give candidates an up-to-date idea of the technical audits that take place in a healthcare environment. The comprehensive course covers what they are, how they take place, what is audited, and what information is produced.
Spencer-Cook explained training and education within the sector is as pertinent and paramount as ever, and revealed a common sweeping statement from more apprehensive candidates is that ‘anybody can clean’.
Neil continued: “It’s a problem in the industry and you regularly get people on courses who comment they’ve been cleaning for years and don’t need training; you can encounter some resistance. Sometimes those candidates are apprehensive about training as they haven’t done any for a long time.
“Whereas what we’re increasingly seeing in the sector is that training is being requested more often, with more people participating in training opportunities, which is driving more online options.”
Soft Services Manager, Julie Lee, explained how the BICSc Virtual Training Suite had made a positive difference for her team. Julie said: “We were very happy to have the virtual online session and assessment. It’s a wonderful breakthrough in terms of practicality with sessions being engaging, whilst being aware of COVID protocols and any restrictions in place.
“They have opened doors, demonstrating that training is non-stop whatever the situation all over the world. Teaching and learning through a different way on a virtual platform really makes this consistent and available, even from afar.”
