News G4S Olympic losses increase
G4S has struck a compensation deal with the Olympic Games' organising committee, Locog, that will see the firm incur losses on the Olympics contract of about £70million — up from a previous estimate of £50million.
The company said that the main
difference between this deal and the previous one was an agreement to waive a larger proportion of the project management charge. G4S came under severe criticism ahead of the Games, when it emerged that it had failed to recruit and train enough of the guards it

The University of Sheffield will be the first university in the UK to have Google Street View inside its buildings, with photographs of one of the University’s libraries, the Information Commons, already online. Accredited Google photographer and graduate from the University, Edward Miller, will shoot
the images. He said: “Google Street View is such an incredible resource, that it is hard to remember that it is still only five years old. It allows us to visit places halfway across the globe that are inaccessible, either because of time, money or practicality.”

Crown Paints announces Climate Week sponsorship at Ecobuild
Sponsorship of Climate Week reinforces Crown’s long-standing commitment to the environment, including the company’s award- winning programme, ‘Earthbalance’. Earthbalance has seen Crown secure a clutch of high profile accolades in 2012, including the Sustainable Innovation Award from the British Coatings Federation, and the Sustainable Business Award For Large Companies from the Lancashire Business Environment Awards.
Crown Paints will be marking Ecobuild with prominent support for Britain’s biggest climate change campaign, Climate Week. The UK paint manufacturer has been announced as a national partner of the initiative, which runs from 4th –10th March.
From its stand number S330 at Ecobuild – which takes place at ExCeL, London, from 5th – 7th March – the Crown team will be highlighting how the company’s approach can support specification professionals in areas including reduced waste streams, the achievement of BREEAM ratings and products offering extended maintenance cycles.
In 2008, Crown launched ‘Earthbalance’ a dedicated
07
sustainability programme, featuring an ambitious, long-term target to drive down its own greenhouse gas emissions, with the target of a 10% reduction in 2015 and 25% in 2020. These two targets are in addition to a sustainability target of zero waste to landfill, originally targeted for December 2012 – which was achieved more than 12 months ahead of schedule.
Mark Lloyd, Crown Paints’ Sustainability Manager, said: “Our focus is not to just provide a few niche ‘green’ products. By measuring and evaluating the carbon footprint of everything we do, we can make improvements, without impacting on the quality of the paint we produce.”
