Ecobuild Preview

Take our word for it Still questioning whether or not to attend this year’s Ecobuild?

Managing Editor, Eve Douglas, provides food for thought. You don’t need telling again – but unless you have been living under a rock, Ecobuild is the world’s largest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment and is once again being held at London’s ExCeL. This year, the event will take place between Tuesday 5th – Thursday 7th March and is set to be one of the biggest showcases of sustainable design and construction products in the world.

Being an online magazine, we know a thing or two about being sustainable, so it goes without saying that we think that Ecobuild is one the most important events on the industry calendar. Not only does it have the largest gathering of architects and specifiers of any

event in the UK but, according to the show’s organisers, a massive 26,659 Ecobuild visitors have not attended any other exhibition in the past two years – so this really could be your only chance to get face-time with the people who you want to meet the most. The Construction Index Top 100 Construction Companies 2012 states that 78% of the top 100 construction companies in the UK visit also visit the show – even more reason to get yourself to London and immerse yourself in everything it has to offer.

I attended the show last year and was really impressed with it. Everyone wants to show off their eco-friendly credentials in a way that really makes people sit up and

take notice and there was no shortage of weird and wonderful stands to go and have a nosy at. I seem to remember a lot of the stands being made to look like houses, and even streets, and I thought this was a really effective way of exhibitors showing how their products work in the real world. The seminar programme is always really impressive too; last year saw InterfaceFLOR’s Sustainability Director, Ramon Arratia, discuss recycling being the main point of focus for the carpet tile company, and this year I am particularly looking forward to the ‘Self-Build and Renovation’ topic, which will be chaired by Sally Tagg, Managing Director of Foxley Tagg Planning and will look at getting planning permission for sustainable self-builds.

If you’re already sold on attending Ecobuild, you don’t need to hear any more from me, but if I have given you food for thought, make sure you get your comfiest pair of shoes at the ready and head to London next month.
