10 QUESTIONS
10 QUESTIONS WITH... ANDREW WILCOCK
Each month we ask a flooring industry professional the Tomorrow’s Flooring 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Andrew Wilcock, Commercial Marketing Manager for Karndean Designflooring.
Q4.
If money was no object, what car
would you buy? A truly British made beast; the Aston Martin Vanquish. Can someone please lend me £190,000?
Q7. Q8. Q1. Q2.
What was your first job?
Marketing Operations Officer at Arnold Laver Timber world, supporting both the general public and trade customers.
How did you get into the flooring
industry? This is my first position within the Commercial Flooring sector – so far so good. Everyone I have met out and about has been very friendly and incredibly passionate about the industry.
Q3. 54
Who, in any other industry do you
most admire? It would have to be Steve Jobs for driving such progressive innovation and, let’s face it, changing the way we live our lives.
Q5.
How would you improve the
flooring industry? I’m not sure I would, having only been in the industry for six months; there is healthy competition, good product innovation and a lot of very nice people. The only issue would be the economic climate at the moment which has a large impact on all of us.
Q6.
What did you want to be when you
were little? I have always had a passion for motor racing, especially Formula 1. I could always imagine myself on that grid getting ready to race, however this was normally on the Scalectrix track.
What do you do to unwind?
Either work my way around the golf course or take the chocolate Labrador for a walk (hopefully via the local!)
If you could have a dinner party with
any three people, dead or alive, with one other person cooking and another person providing the music, who would they be and why? Cooking would be Keith Floyd, he always seemed to be able to put together an amazing looking meal with limited ingredients, and there would be a certainty that the wine would be flowing. For musical entertainment I would have to invite David Bowie, apart from loving his music I expect he would have some good rock and roll stories to keep us entertained. The third person would be golfer Rory McIlroy; he just seems like such a nice guy who would appreciate a good meal, a few drinks and some good company. Maybe he can help me with my handicap whilst he’s round too.
Q9.
What, do you think, is the future of the
flooring industry? Innovation is integral to the growth of the market, with
new production methods and developments allowing flooring manufacturers to offer real breadth of choice when it comes to finishes, tones and textures. Technology will also start to play a large role in the flooring market, I’m sure it won’t be long before the floor measures the daily footfall itself and ‘pings’ you an update via email!
Peter Kelsey, Managing Director of Designer Contracts, asks...
Q10.
How do we get a UK flooring show
that the majority of suppliers and retailers attend? The issue here is the sheer number of different events that go on throughout the flooring calendar. Knowing which one to attend is always a nightmare and there is always an urge to attend the show that your competitors are not, this seems to compound the lack of one key industry event. Do we all veto a number of events and agree to attend one? There will always be a maverick!
