SPOTLIGHT
SPOTLIGHT ON: WINE BARREL FLOORING
Back in September last year, we looked at whisky barrel flooring. This year, we’re taking a look at wine barrel flooring. Tomorrow’s Flooring Editor, Eve Douglas, looks further into this innovative product, focusing on the original source.
American company, Fontenay Distinctive Wood Products, procure wine barrels and painstakingly mill them into distinct product lines to make some of the most unique and beautiful flooring available. The company are based in California; a state renowned for its beautiful vineyard. The product line is known as The Vintage Barrel Collection.
This product group is made from materials reclaimed from the wine industry, with the Cooperage and Wine Infusion products being the most widely recognised. The Wine Infusion product represents the inside of the barrel, where the wood has been naturally stained by the wine during the maturation process. The stave material is created using the outer sides of the barrel, and once the hoops are removed, they leave behind distinctive markings and texture. The company’s Cooperage product represents the outside of the barrel head with all of its patina, cooperstamps and special markings from its time spent in various Napa wineries.

No two planks are exactly alike, and a variety of specialised techniques are implemented to provide distinctive timeless sophistication that Fontenay aim to epitomise with all of their products. As the company, themselves, put it: “A Fontenay floor, or countertop, is a statement of personal style and attention to detail. This product brings the rich history and aged beauty of wine into the personality of your unique home.”
Looking ahead, Kate Reidel, who works for the company,
Cooperage Wine Room
revealed to us that there are several new products in the pipeline that are quite different in appearance, with a much more broad application appeal. She commented: “This is also made from reclaimed material. These pieces were used to flavour the wine inside of the large wine tanks.” And, staying with the reclaimed theme, the company are also planning on introducing a new product line, available in six colours, later this autumn. Nautical Timbers, Kate told us, is a “product group is made from materials reclaimed from the shipping industry. The current release is made from material used from the
early 1900s until the containerisation of ships in the seventies and eighties. This season's release includes six colours.” We’ll certainly be keeping our eyes peeled!
