OF THE MONTH
MAKEOVER
PERFECT HARMONY
For this issue’s Makeover of the Month, we look at the Deaf Village Ireland; a dedicated centre for the deaf and hearing impaired community operated by the Catholic Institute for Deaf People (CIDP), which has become the latest in a long list of locations that are benefiting from acoustic flooring.
The Deaf Village Island has recently been fitted with Itec Contract Floors’ Silento Salzburg acoustic flooring, having 1,605m2
of it installed
in its new premises in Dublin. Specified by O’Mahoney Pike Architects and fitted by John Sisk & Son Ltd and Crean Mosaics, Silento Salzburg flooring combines resilience and durability with sensitive acoustic insulation.
“The acoustic properties of Silento Salzburg flooring make it ideal for this busy environment, reducing excess noise and ultimately making it easier for the hearing impaired to
30
communicate with those around them,” explained Sean Flynn, Contracts Manager at Crean Mosaics. “Many visitors to Deaf Village use hearing aids that rely on a quiet atmosphere to work to their full potential, so the fact that all Silento floors have 18dB of sound insulation is a major benefit.”
237m2 of Salzburg, selected
in black, covers the stairways of Deaf Village, with a further 224m2 vibrant red and 428m2
in of on-
trend grey working together in the main Atrium circulation hall and café bar area. The Atrium circulation
area is a large concourse zone that acts as a social meeting point for the surrounding office rooms. The Silento flooring here also helps to absorb the ambient sound generated by printers, telephones and other office equipment, as well as conversations and general movement, in order to create a peaceful working environment for staff. 716m2 of light turquoise Salzburg covers the floors of the communal gym area, coordinating with the peach walls and injecting colour into the interior as well as softening the noise generated by loud exercise machines. “The acoustic advantages of Silento Salzburg flooring were incredibly important during the specification process, but its fantastic performance benefits and aesthetic look were a major selling point too,” Sean continued. “The four colourways chosen for Deaf Village work well together to provide a seamless look, with the authentic textured surface
structure adding to the overall appeal of the range.”
Durable and resilient, Silento Salzburg has a 0.5mm wear layer treated with HyperGuard + PUR and is capable of withstanding high-impact use. With R10 slip restraint too, Salzburg is a great choice for busy locations prone to high footfall. “The robust nature of Silento Salzburg flooring is a major performance benefit,” added Nigel May, Projects Manager at John Sisk & Son Ltd. “Crucially, it did not scratch or show any signs of wear and tear, even though it was fitted early and had to withstand the impact of heavy furniture installations after it had been laid. Most importantly, CIDP is incredibly satisfied with the new flooring, commenting that it is very easy to maintain and looks as good as new after cleaning.”
