Tere were moments earlier this year when we wondered if we’d ever get to see the Direct Commerce Awards presented. Not because of a lack of entries – there were heaps, with lots from businesses which had never entered before. Not because of a lack of Judges or delays on their part – this was a great roster of Judges, and all submitted their scores bang on time. Not because of the lack of a venue – we’d had one signed up for our original June ’22 date a full 10 months ahead. Not to mention a celebrity presenter, our lead sponsor More2, our category sponsors, a master of ceremonies, and of course, our shortlisted guests.

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? Strike action which aimed to bring the railway network to a standstill. No mainline trains in or out of London, with part of the Underground network affected too. Straddling our date and making it nigh on impossible for our participants to travel in and travel back out of London.
We were extremely fortunate to be able to work with the venue to move the event to a new date. Te most feasible option was in October. It was going to be a long wait, but we worked on the basis that the strikes would be history by then, and that most of our evening participants would have sufficient time to plan around the new date.

Meanwhile, we suffered the very sad loss of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the nation mourned. Dates were set for the lying in state in both Edinburgh and London, and for the wonderfully staged funeral procession which via TV coverage enabled the entire nation, indeed the world, to pay their respects.
