02 PLASTICS

PACKAGING TAX

The plastic packaging tax is a new law in the UK. It puts a £211 tax on every tonne of plastic packaging that has less than 30% recycled material. The tax applies to a broad range of products, both single-use and reusable. All plastic polymers including bio-plastics are in scope.

The goal of this tax is to encourage companies to use more recycled material in their packaging. After the first year, it’s hard to say exactly how much impact the tax has had. According to HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs), the tax has raised over £200 million, and more than 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging have been reported to have less than 30% recycled content.

As a supplier of plastic products, Lockhart has ensured that they have completed the due diligence required and are able to report to our customers which products we supply are affected by the tax.

Manufacturing food-grade products with recycled content can be a challenge with some types of plastic, however, we will continue to work with our suppliers to monitor innovation and changes to regulation in this area.

03 SCOPE

1, 2 & 3

Scope 1: This covers the Green House Gas emissions that a company makes directly, for example the fuel it uses in its delivery vehicles.

Scope 2: These are indirect emissions, like the gases produced when a company uses energy to heat its warehouses.

Scope 3: These are also the emissions a business is indirectly responsible for. These are often found in the supply chain, such as the energy and materials used by supply partners to produce food packaging or crockery.

By measuring this, businesses can better understand how they can meet their public and legal commitments to reduce their carbon emissions and meet net-zero commitments.

At Lockhart, we measure and report on our scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions and are working to create efficiencies and reduce these as part of our global group targets.
