Do you have plans to achieve a “Circular Economy”? Churchill is committed to developing an internal circular economy, as part of an ongoing journey to a more sustainable future. Currently, we take measures such as recycling 100% of clay, waste water and glaze, with ongoing trials across all areas of the manufacturing process to continuously improve our practices. This includes working to develop a process to reuse fired biscuit plates in the clay recipe. We are also part of the British Ceramics Confederation, working to make our whole industry net-zero by 2050.

WE TAKE MEASURES SUCH AS

RECYCLING 100%

GLAZE, WITH ONGOING TRIALS ACROSS ALL AREAS OF THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

How well do you think the hospitality industry in the UK is doing in terms of sustainability? The UK hospitality industry is a conscious industry, with a sustainable focus from food to plate. We’re seeing the rise of plant-based dishes, made from organic, locally sourced ingredients and innovative menus that target waste reduction. Consumers are mindful, making conscious decisions to be healthier and more sustainable, eating less meat and increasing their intake of fresh, seasonal vegetables. Demand for restaurants to buy from a responsible supply chain and eliminate single-use plastics is growing, as we find more consumers turning to us as a domestic manufacturer with a local and ethical chain. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for our stakeholders and is considered a top priority for Churchill as we progress on our journey to net zero.

OF CLAY, WASTE WATER

Where do you see the future of producing ceramics to minimise the use of fossil fuels? Being an energy intensive business poses a natural challenge to the reduction of carbon emissions, so we invest significant effort and resource to

target continuous improvement.

Our team is focused on researching new ways to reduce energy consumption across the site, while pioneering efficient technologies and looking into alternative fuel sources too. For example, we have successfully fired the world’s first hydrogen fired plate as part of an experiment with the British Ceramics Confederation.

With a rich history of over 225 years of innovation, passion and expertise, Churchill is recognised as a natural partner for full tabletop solutions in the hospitality industry. Dedicated to continuous improvement, longevity, performance and service.
