Laboratory Products 39 High-performance magnetic beads for immunoassay optimisation

AMSBIO has expanded its portfolio to include MagSi-STA beads, high-performance magnetic beads suitable for use as detection labels in magnetic immunoassays or as a solid support phase in immunoassays. These beads feature a silica matrix with covalently attached streptavidin, offering various sizes, chemistries, and binding capacities to optimise in vitro diagnostic applications.

To simplify bead selection for specific applications, AMSBIO has launched the MagSi-STA Trial kit. This kit is particularly valuable during the trial phase of assay development, providing 1ml samples of each of the eight MagSi-STA products for quick evaluation and selection based on application requirements.

MagSi-STA beads, based on a silica matrix, offer advantages such as lower background chemiluminescence and UV/VIS signals compared to alternative substrates like polystyrene. This characteristic enhances assay sensitivity and dynamic range, making MagSi-STA beads suitable for various assays, regardless of the readout method. The silica matrix ensures product stability across a wide pH range and under high ionic strength conditions.

AMSBIO’s extensive range of magnetic silica beads, including MagSi beads ranging from 150nm to 5μm, provides diverse options for biological applications. These beads are designed for the separation, concentration, and purification of biomolecules, specific cells, or cell compartments.

Monoclonal antibodies to avian influenza viruses

The CDC reports that the H5N1 Bird Flu has been detected in several species of wild birds as well as domestic poultry flocks. Sporadic infections with this virus have also been detected in mammals (fox, raccoon, skunks, mountain lions). One US case has been reported following exposure to infected birds, but no person-to-person transmission has occurred.

ViroStat’s monoclonal antibodies target the highly conserved nucleoprotein of the Influenza A virus. Thus these monoclonal antibody pairs detect many Flu A isolates found in human, avian, swine and equine sources. These include viruses of H1-H14 types and N1-N9 types. Immunoassays utilising these antibody pairs are useful for detecting Flu A in humans as well as for surveillance of circulation in other animal species.

Next-generation nitrile gloves redefine lab safety standards

Kimberly-Clark Professional™ introduces the Kimtech™ Polaris™ Nitrile Gloves, marking a significant advancement in lab safety and comfort. Designed to meet the demanding needs of scientists working in challenging environments, these gloves prioritise both safety and comfort.

Crafted for optimal protection and strength, Kimtech™ Polaris™ Nitrile Gloves excel in superior dexterity and comfort. The gloves hold US Ergonomics certification, affirming tangible ergonomic benefits by enhancing comfort, fit, and reducing the risk of injuries. Positioned as the most protective glove within the Kimtech™ portfolio, these gloves are set to redefine safety standards.

Franck Bureth, EMEA Regional Scientific Category Leader at Kimberly-Clark Professional™, emphasised the impact of the glove design on user well-being. Bureth stated: “The Kimtech™ Polaris™ Nitrile Glove design alleviates stress on joints, ligaments, and tendons, reducing workplace hand injuries related to repetitive use and hand strain. This, in turn, enhances worker efficiency through improved grip and performance.”

Beyond these advantages, the gloves feature a proprietary nitrile formulation and premium grade, coupled with cutting-edge manufacturing technology. Offering enhanced chemical splash protection (Type B (JKOPT)) and extended chemotherapy drug splash protection, Kimtech™ Polaris™ Nitrile Gloves set a new standard in safety.

Kimtech™ Polaris™ Nitrile Gloves cater to laboratory, life science, and non-sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing environments. Rigorously tested against 29 common chemicals and 24 chemotherapy drugs, these gloves effectively close lab coat gaps for maximum protection. Available in two lengths (25cm and 30cm), they ensure maximum protection.

Ensuring optimal skin health protection, Kimtech™ Polaris™ Nitrile Gloves minimise skin reactions through non-detectable levels of vulcanizing agent. Textured fingertips and a smooth finish prevent drops and breakage incidents, even in wet conditions. The proprietary formulation, coupled with the distinctive Dark Magenta™ colour, makes it an effective addition to scientific environments.

Kimtech™ Polaris™ Nitrile Gloves are recyclable through the RightCycle by Kimberly-Clark Professional® program. Pioneering large-scale recycling efforts for non-hazardous lab and cleanroom PPE waste, this initiative transforms used PPE into new consumer goods.
