32 Microwave assisted extraction for PFAS analysis - new application note

Many laboratories measure PFAS in a variety of different matrices where the sample preparation stage can often be the time limiting step that can take up to 80% of the total analysis time. An alternative method that is currently widely used for sample preparation for organic pollutant analysis is Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE) that can now be employed for PFAS samples using a new rotor specifically developed for this application.

Using the Milestone EthosX extraction system from Analytix coupled with the 44-place rotor provides an EPA 1633 compliant solution and offers high throughput with PFAS free disposable vials that eliminates any cleaning stage. The samples are kept in the same vial throughout the process thereby minimising contamination, eliminating possible carryover, and reducing sample extraction time by 70%.

Advanced sensors in the EthosX microwave system deliver precise temperature control throughout the extraction process with uniform conditions across all positions that guarantees consistent and reproducible results with excellent recoveries vs. alternative techniques.

Finding an autoclave with a small footprint that can handle large objects relative to its chamber size is simple with Priorclave’s extensive range of top loading autoclaves. Sought after by research, quality assurance, and teaching labs that utilise tall flasks, bioreactors, etc. The EV100-BASE covers all the ‘basics’ you would expect from a robust and reliable autoclave, such as media preparation, waste loads, and sterilising loose instruments, open containers, and labware.

Despite being a ‘BASE’ model, nothing about its construction deviates from higher-end ‘Performance’ models. Priorclave’s seam welder creates one of the strongest, straightest, and smoothest seams possible, ensuring overall strength and reliability for a lifetime of regular use. This level of attention and detail is applied equally to all Priorclave’s BASE, SMART, and PERFORMANCE models.

Every epoxy-covered surface has Biomaster™ Protection incorporated into it. Providing a highly effective and permanent control of harmful bacteria, making each surface more hygienic whilst providing a durable lifelong protection. This tough special epoxy finish is proven to reduce bacterial growth by up to 99.99% and is highly effective against MRSA, E.coli, Listeria, Legionella, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Pseudomonas and over 50 other species. The advantage of using a silver-based technology is that it is inorganic and non-leaching, providing lifelong antimicrobial protection without allowing bacteria to develop resistance.

The EV100-BASE also features Priorclave’s exclusive Tactrol®3 user-friendly control system, which enables fully programmable cycles, customisation and control, even whilst gloved.

Simple to install and highly effective, this model is the perfect addition to any research, quality assurance, and teaching lab. It is no wonder that they remain one of their best-selling types of autoclaves worldwide.

Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc, a leading provider of life science research and clinical diagnostics solutions, has unveiled the XP-Design Assay Salmonella Serotyping Solution. This innovative tool enables fast and accurate detection and characterisation of Salmonella species in food and environmental samples.

Salmonella is a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium responsible for significant foodborne illnesses. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), it is the leading cause of reported foodborne infections in the US, accounting for approximately 1.4 million cases and over 400 deaths each year

Utilising real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, Bio-Rad’s assay amplifies and identifies specific Salmonella serotypes using fluorescent probes. This molecular serotyping approach facilitates rapid response during outbreaks and supports ongoing monitoring in food processing environments.

The XP-Design Assay provides a streamlined and flexible solution for serotype identification following initial Salmonella screening. Its ready-to- use format includes serotype-specific oligonucleotides (primers and probes), ensuring high specificity while minimising cross-reactivity, resulting in reliable and reproducible results.

“With the XP-Design Salmonella Serotyping Assays, we are raising the bar for food safety testing by providing rapid and accurate solutions,” said Franck Edouard, Senior Marketing Director of Bio-Rad’s Food Science Division. “This launch reaffirms our dedication to delivering advanced tools that help detect and identify Salmonella, strengthening food safety measures and consumer protection.”

CO2

incubator with built-in roller Crafted with precision by Wiggens, the CO2

incubator emerges as essential tool for various experimental pursuits, from cultivating animal cells to hatching and

germinating processes. With rapid heating, swift temperature recovery, and precise temperature control, this premium incubator ensures optimal conditions for cell growth and research.

Its innovative design features electric heating wires surrounding the chamber, ensuring uniform heat distribution. With dry-wall insulation, maintenance is minimised while temperature stability is maximised. A base heater maintains water in a tray for humidity control, while a circulation fan ensures even moisture dispersion. Additionally, front door and frame heaters prevent condensation, maintaining clarity for observation.

Partnering seamlessly with the CO2 incubator, the Celrol Elite roller apparatus offers configurations from 5 to 88 bottle positions, facilitating cell attachment

culture. This versatile apparatus accommodates standard plastic bottles, providing scalability and convenience for researchers. The roller culture technique, utilising gentle rotation, enhances gas exchange and promotes cell growth.

For high-demand applications like vaccine production, the Celrol Elite can be expanded with additional layers, accommodating up to 11 tiers of bottles. Wiggens supports this system with options for battery backup, SMS alarm notifications, and direct printer connections for streamlined reporting.

With its adaptability to standard cell culture bottles, the Celrol Elite roller apparatus offers a versatile solution for a wide array of biotechnological endeavours. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/zz7Q and ilmt.co/PL/pKbB
