Sample Preparation & Processing

Increase Reproducibility by Automating Your Sample Preparation

Sample preparation is an important part of an analytical workfl ow. Accurate and reproducible standard or sample preparation requires well-trained laboratory personnel. The EasyPlusTM sample preparation device, Easy Dose is designed to perform precise, accurate, and fully automated liquid dispensing tasks.

Your routine dispensing application is easy and straightforward. Simply enter the weight of your sample and defi ne a target concentration, the device will automatically dispense liquid to reach your requirement. The Easy Dose provides improved productivity when connecting to an MS, ML or ME balance from Mettler-Toledo, as well as minimised transcription errors with an automatic sample weight transfers. The Easy Dose will calculate and accurately dispense the necessary amount of solvent for you, achieving precise sample preparation according to your requirement.

The Easy Dose allows you to defi ne the volume, dispensing speed, or time to tailor the dispensing activities to fulfi l your application needs. This ensures you can prepare your liquid dispensing for various applications, while improving reproducibility. Your routine tasks are started easily with just a tap on the home screen, with clear touch screen guidance, and a user interface that speaks your language - and 14 more.

High-Torque/High Speed Stirrers Offer Maximum Effi ciency and Safety

Wiggens introduces the new generation overhead stirrers WB3000-D, specifi cally designed for high-torque applications and/or high speed applications where conventional stirrers reach their limit with regard to sample viscosity or speed requirements. The WB3000-D offers a high resolution TFT display screen, which not only shows the current speed and torque, but also the set speed, gear stage, controlling mode and timer settings. With a BLDC motor, it is highly benefi cial to the durability of the product. In comparison to AC motors, BLDC motors are more quiet, robust and maintenance free. In addition, WB3000-D employs a two stage gear transmission box for optimal processing of high torque at low speeds or low torque at high speeds. A special feature is the smart torque adjustment that enables the stirrer to maintain the set speed even if the viscosity of the sample changes during the stirring process. The latest chuck design allows easier impeller changes and guarantees that the impeller sits perfectly.

The housing is made of die-cast aluminium and features heat reduction fi ns, which contributes to keeping the unit cool in long-term applications. An RS-232 and RS-485 input as well as analogue control make the stirrer highly versatile and adoptable for different applications.

Three basic packages for quick confi guration are available: P1 includes the stirrer and stand; P2 includes the stirrer, stand and S.S. impeller; P3 includes stirrer, stand and PTFE impeller. The accessory section gives advice on the best type of impeller and the right length of the shaft for each application. A remote version, WB3000-DF, is also available.

Optimised Microplate for SARS-CoV-2 Nucleic Acid Purifi cation

Porvair Sciences has introduced a new 2.2ml 96 deep well plate specifically designed to be fully compatible with the Thermo Scientific™ KingFisher™ range of nucleic acid purification systems. For many labs, up-front sample preparation and handling represents a major bottleneck in their research workflow, as it is largely done manually. Widely used for the nucleic acid purification step in SARS-CoV-2 testing, the KingFisher™ Flex instrument can process 96 samples per run when paired with 96 deep-well microplates. These systems are reported to drastically reduce processing time and increase productivity.

Krzysztof Kielmann, Microplates product manager at Porvair Sciences explained: “As the COVID-19 pandemic has spread around the world the volume of RT-PCR tests required to detect and trace the spread of the virus has grown exponentially. With KingFisher™ systems offering one of the most widely used workflow solutions for medium to high-throughput SARS-CoV-2 testing the quantity of 96-well plates required by labs has grown enormously. However, many labs have struggled to find suitable 96-well deep well plates for their KingFisher™ systems and have had to compromise performance in order to maintain testing volumes.”

Designed for compatibility and efficiency, each v-shaped bottom well in Porvair’s new plate supports the specialised magnetic tips of all KingFisher™ Instruments perfectly maximising liquid sample collection, mixing and uptake during the purification process. From sample collection, mixing to purification, the Porvair Sciences 96 deep well plate is designed to ensure reproducible purification of nucleic acids from SARS-CoV-2 patient samples. Porvair Sciences low affinity deep well plates are manufactured in a cleanroom production environment using virgin polypropylene that has the lowest leachables, extractables and is free from DNase and RNase. This allows SARS-CoV-2 test samples to be purified with the confidence of no risk of contamination or interference during the magnetic particle processing used by KingFisher™ nucleic acid purification systems.

Unique Dual Use Instrument Provides Centrifugal and Cutting Mill Comminution

The Variable Speed Rotor Mill PULVERISETTE 14 premium line from Fritsch is ideal for efficient pre- and fine comminution of soft, medium-hard, brittle, hard-brittle, fibrous, temperature-sensitive materials and provides an extremely fast sample throughput, as well as, if desired, heavy-metal- and iron-free.

The system combines two mills in one instrument and is the only Variable Speed Rotor Mill which is suitable for cutting. The Variable Speed Rotor Mill PULVERISETTE 14 premium line offers impact, shearing and cutting comminution, with higher performance, better cooling and significantly less noise than comparable instruments.

With the powerful 22,000 rpm of the impact rotor, as a centrifugal mill, it ensures a fast sample throughput of 15 l/h and more, which can be further increased by the use of the Fritsch Cyclone separators. It is ideal for soft to medium-hard, brittle, fibrous and temperature-sensitive samples. Samples which are difficult to grind, or extremely temperature-sensitive samples, can be embrittled with the addition of liquid nitrogen and subsequently comminuted.

By using a cutting rotor, the Variable Speed Rotor Mill becomes a Cutting Mill, ideal for efficient pre- and fine comminution of soft to hard-tough, fibrous materials and plastics. In contrast to conventional Cutting Mills, the entire grinding chamber and all grinding parts can be removed without tools, cleaned in the dishwasher and are autoclavable for sterile comminution.

The Intelligence-Safety-Control feature ensures simple operation and the mill will only start once everything is correct. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/XMDq
