56 How Increased Remote Working is Driving Specialised Remote Learning

With the Covid 19 pandemic causing concerns about spreading infection and highlighting remote working practices throughout organisations large and small as a consequence, some people have, understandably, worried about whether to attend ‘in person’ training courses. However, training remains an essential requirement whether for new starters or industry compliance, especially for highly specialised industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotech and food production to name a few, so what should you do?

Traditional methods of learning such as lectures, workshops or seminars continue to be highly effective as they provide a real-time learning experience and direct contact with tutors. Thankfully though, global connectivity and online training such as webinars, offer organisations accessible and safe options when it comes to unforeseen circumstances such as pandemics and for those facing logistical issues when organising collective groups of employees to unite simultaneously. Removing employees from the workplace in order to provide training, although essential for optimum productivity, is often a struggle to achieve and challenging to synchronise across different locations and time zones.

Using webinars as a mode of teaching has become globally accepted amongst companies, as well as individuals, as an alternative to conventional educational methods, because of its convenience and flexibility.

Biopharma Group now offers several types of lyophilisation online training in addition to its scheduled and customised on-site lyophilisation training courses: live/ interactive webinars that cover pre-set modules; pre-recorded online training series; customised live webinars which allow for the course content to be selected by and driven by the commissioning client.

In conclusion, if, for whatever reason, in person scheduled training courses are not an option right now but you and your team need training in freeze drying or on specific lyo-related topics, Biopharma Group has a safe alternative option for you i.e. webinar/ online training courses which can cover the theoretical aspects, with hands-on lab based elements available once everything returns to normal.

If you would like to learn more about any of the lyophilisation technology training course options available contact the Biopharma Group. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/Lpm5

High-Quality Stills Added to Laboratory Technology Portfolio

Lauda has extended its laboratory technology product range with the Lauda Puridest stills product line. The devices with the ‘GFL Technology’ quality mark produce an ultra-pure, low-gas, sterile and pyrogen-free distillate with very low conductivity. Puridest stills are used in bacteriological and medical sample preparation and also in the preparation of cell and tissue cultures. They are also used for cleaning and sterilisation processes, buffer solutions and microbiological and analytical applications. The distillate complies with the DAB regulations and the specifications of international pharmacopoeias. Lauda Puridest stills also distil raw water of lower quality, separate pollutants, and reliably kill germs such as bacteria and viruses.

Lauda Puridest stills are available throughout the world in four high-performance product lines with 14 single- or two-stage model variants in the form of stainless steel or glass stills. Depending on the model, the devices are equipped with a storage tank and produce 2 to 12 litres of distillate per hour with conductivities down to below 1.6 µS/cm. Apart from their reliability and extremely long service life, Lauda Puridest stills are characterised by their simple handling in the daily work in the laboratory. The stills are extremely easy to commission and operate. The ultra-pure water can be extracted directly after connection to the raw water and power supply. The devices are maintenance-free, because the glass stills automatically remove pollutants.

Distillation is an effective and reliable way of producing pure water. The distinctive feature of distillation is that it only requires the input of energy. Compared with other auxiliary materials, such as absorbents or solvents, energy has the major advantage that it can be easily supplied to a system and removed again. As a result, stills require minimum maintenance. They are maintenance-free apart from regular cleaning. Distilled water, also referred to as aqua dest (lat. aqua destillata), is produced when steam condenses. This ‘pure water’ is approx. 99.5% free of salts, organic substances, microorganisms, pyrogens and bacteria.

New Deployment Model Optimises LIMS Implementation in the Amazon Web Services Cloud

Thermo Fisher Scientific has expanded deployment model options for SampleManager LIMS software, offering laboratories end-to-end support of the software deployment in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud.

Under a contract agreement, Thermo Fisher will manage the entire deployment process from installation and maintenance to backup and recovery. As a result, laboratories will benefit from significantly reduced financial and human resource investment associated with setting-up, running and maintaining traditional on-premise deployments or deployments to their own cloud hosting service.

At the same time, laboratories will retain control over the software upgrades and validation schedule, while taking advantage of unlimited and secure access to data from anywhere at any time, which will drive well-informed decision making and easier cross-collaboration. Furthermore, AWS Cloud deployment will enable unparalleled levels of scalability, with the LIMS expanding to meet evolving business needs.

“Life science and industrial laboratories are increasingly adopting a cloud-first approach to enterprise-wide LIMS implementation,” said Richard Milne, Vice President and General Manager of Digital Science. “However, managing deployments to a laboratory’s own cloud hosting service can be a costly and resource-intensive process. We have developed the new cloud services to alleviate this burden and enable SampleManager LIMS software customers to use the system’s superior functionality and integration capabilities without having to invest significant resources into the setup and ongoing management of a cloud environment.”

The Cloud Services offering has been designed to provide optimal data security and protection. In addition to the security features available through standard AWS Cloud deployments, Thermo Fisher also implements its own robust Corporate Information Security (CIS) program, which outlines additional measures in line with security-by-design principles to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of data.

Win an Aspiration System for Your Lab

Integra Biosciences is giving you the chance to win a VACUSAFE Aspiration System for your lab. This compact, all-in-one laboratory vacuum pump enables safe and efficient collection and containment of biological liquid waste, meeting stringent biosafety level guidelines (BSL-1 to -3). Easy to use and operate, it combines a vacuum pump, collection bottle, overflow protection and hydrophobic filter in a closed system, with a range of safety features that ensure total containment of biohazardous liquids and optimal protection of operators for maximum productivity.

Each VACUSAFE system is supplied with the VACUBOY vacuum hand operator, which can be fitted with a variety of adapters and consumables to allow gentle aspiration of liquids from virtually any type of labware, including tubes, dishes, bottles, T-flasks, and 24 and 96 well microplates, as well as fast emptying of large culture flasks. To further increase versatility, two VACUBOY hand operators can be connected to the same VACUSAFE, allowing two people to work simultaneously in one biosafety cabinet.

Integra are giving you a chance to win one of 20 VACUSAFE Aspiration Systems for your lab, including: VACUSAFE Aspiration System with integrated pump; 4 litre bottle (polypropylene) and bottle handle; lid with quick tubing couplings (PVDF) and liquid level sensor; tubing set with filter; VACUBOY hand operator.

The competition is open to everyone - whether or not you are an existing customer - and entering is easy. All you need to do is visit the Integra Biosciences website and fill out a short questionnaire. The deadline for entries is the 30th of September, and the winner will be announced shortly afterwards.
