Mass Spectrometry
Gas Analysers Feature Broad Pressure Range
Hiden Analytical’s QGA systems are suited for direct real-time analysis, quantification and control of gas related processes ranging in pressure from 100 mbar to 30 bar.
The bench-top mass spectrometer systems are coupled to the user process by the integral robust, flexible, quartz-lined heated capillary with sample consumption rates as low as 1 mL/min and response times as low as 150 milliseconds. Process interface options enable analyses through the very broad pressure regime and are suited to diverse application areas including top-gas analysis, measurement of dissolved species, multi-stream monitoring of gas feed and process exhaust lines (up to 80 individual gas streams), process/thermal reaction studies, respiratory analysis.
System operation, calibration, data acquisition and display are fully automated, with full manual control selectable when required. Integral I/O’s permit import of external data, such as temperature, for integration with the mass spectral display, and output of process detail for process control functions.

High-performance MS Technology Brings Ultimate Sensitivity and Speed to Clinical Diagnostics
Sciex Diagnostics, the in vitro diagnostics division of Sciex, has announced the launch of the Citrine™ Triple Quad™ MS/MS and Citrine™ QTRAP® MS/MS systems for clinical diagnostics. The Citrine system is designed specifically to meet the unique needs of clinical labs that require maximum sensitivity, the highest throughput, a wide dynamic range, and the ability to employ simplified sample preparation.
The unique combination of sensitivity and speed offered by the Citrine MS/MS system makes this the ideal choice for the clinical laboratory, enabling trace level analysis, comprehensive panels, and the measurement of both large and small molecules. Triple quadrupole and QTRAP models of the system are available, each offering ultimate sensitivity to enable the measurement of metabolites and biomarkers at picomole concentrations. In addition, the exclusive QTRAP technology enables unique workflows, providing quantitative and qualitative analysis in a single injection, and allowing the use of highly selective MRM3 quantitation to eliminate interferences.
The system is powered by the familiar Analyst®MD software, for intuitive instrument control and data processing. The second generation IonDrive™ Turbo V ionisation source provides robust, reliable performance when analysing even the most complex biological samples, maximises uptime, and enables the use of simpler sample preparation strategies.
The system offers electrospray ionisation (ESI) and atmospheric chemical ionisation (APCI) options, an extended mass range up to m/z 2000, and a wide linear dynamic range, making this a versatile tool for the measurement of a large variety of polar and non-polar biomarkers and metabolites in biological fluids, over a large range of concentrations.
“Reliable quantitative measurement of trace level compounds such as steroidal hormones is extremely difficult. While traditional immunological methods offer high sensitivity, they rely on the selectivity of the antibody used and are prone to misidentification,” said Dr Rao Maddipatti, Associate Professor and Director, Lipidomics Core Facility, Wayne State University. “Mass spectrometric quantification alleviates such concerns of selectivity. With the ultra-sensitive Citrine MS/MS system, not only can these trace level steroids be measured with confidence, but the analyses can also multiplex over a hundred compounds in a single experiment, allowing clinicians and patients to benefit from a bird’s eye view of the metabolome.”

New Micro-Flow LC-MS Solution
The new Nexera Mikros from Shimadzu is a micro flowrate-compatible liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer. It maintains the durability and operability of LC-MS systems while providing a significant increase in sensitivity.
The Nexera Mikros can accommodate a wide range of flowrates, from semi-micro flowrates (100 to 500 µL/ min) which are often used for analysis in existing systems, to micro flowrates (1 to 10 µL/min). With this product, Shimadzu is contributing to improving productivity at pharmaceutical companies and clinical contract research organisations.
Nexera Mikros achieves at least ten times the sensitivity for target compounds compared to standard LC-MS analysis. This is due to the LC-Mikros, a solvent delivery pump with a new control system to reduce pulsation and deliver a stable solvent flow even at low micro flowrates. In addition, positioning of the ionisation interface has been optimised for more efficient sample introduction into the mass spectrometer.
Microscopic gaps (dead volume) in the piping connectors lead to a decrease in sensitivity by causing peak dispersion. UF-Link, a connection mechanism between Shimadzu’s newly developed analytical column and the mass spectrometer, ensures high sensitivity and, at the same time, enables one-touch connection between the analytical column and the ionisation interface for the mass spectrometer. In addition, UF-Link is compatible with connections
between commonly used analytical columns and the ionisation interface, so column selection is flexible to suit the target sample.
The LC-Mikros solvent delivery pump serves a wide flowrate range, from micro flowrates of 1 µL/min to semi-micro flowrates of 500 µL/min. By enabling analysis comparable to existing LC-MS systems and high-sensitivity analysis at micro flowrates, this single unit improves operational efficiency of the LC-MS system and shortens research and development times.
