Laboratory Products 13 Want Less Noise and More Space in Your Lab?
Irritating, rattling, vibrating, droning pumps, chillers, compressors or generators in a laboratory can be very disruptive and potentially harmful to anyone who has to work in such an environment. To reduce the noise as well as improving the ergonomics of labs, ATG Scientific offers a wide range of mobile bench and soundproof solutions to help create much more pleasant working conditions for you and your colleagues. The Company provides expert advice on the best products and most appropriate set ups which can be supplied from the specialist manufacturers IonBench and MS Noise. This ensures you get increased flexibility and much better safety in any lab where there is too much noise and the need for more space and accessibility to operate as well as maintain many types of scientific instrument including LCMS, GCMS, ICP and HPLC.
So if you want a quieter lab with more room to manage instruments and the ability to move equipment safely when needed then ATG Scientific can certainly advise and help to change the way your lab looks and sounds, just ask their customers.

Three-in-One Soil Sensor Boosts Yield in Greenhouses
ADVERTORIAL
Ellutia opens GC Excellence Academy in Cambridgeshire
Looking to Improve Your GC Knowledge
Labcell, the UK distributor for Decagon Devices (Meter Group), believes that many commercial operators of greenhouses could increase yields and/or cut water consumption by using the latest GS3 Greenhouse Sensor. This cost-effective sensor, which is typically connected to an Em50 data logger or an SDI-12 logging system, provides accurate measurements of soil moisture as well as temperature and electrical conductivity (EC).
Accuracies for the three measurements are, respectively, +/-3% VMC (volumetric water content), +/-1°C and +/-5%, though the actual accuracy depends on factors such as generic or custom calibration, substrate composition and measurement range; custom calibration can improve the soil moisture accuracy to +/-1 to 2%. An operating frequency of 70 MHz minimises salinity and textural effects, which enables the sensor to be used in virtually all types of substrate, and the measurement speed is just 150 ms.
By measuring and analysing soil moisture, users can optimise irrigation regimes to increase yields and avoid using water unnecessarily.
The GS3 sensor uses the same proven technology as Decagon’s other soil moisture sensors but this ruggedised model features robust stainless steel needles and a housing in which the electronics are epoxy-encapsulated. It is equally suitable for use in soil and soilless substrates such as peat or perlite. The slender needles easily push through the substrate, causing minimal disturbance. Each sensor is simply inserted from the surface, adjacent to the plant, or inserted into the side of potted plants or, where deeper measurements are required, into the side of a hole that is subsequently backfilled.
Data from the GS3 sensor can be collected locally using a Decagon Device Em50 data logger or an alternative logger, or the sensor can be connected to a logging system using the SDI-12 communications standard. In addition, data can be output as analogue 3.6 V signals.
Labcell is the sole UK distributor for the GS3 Greenhouse Sensor. Download a detailed data sheet directly from Labcell’s website at

British gas chromatography supplier, Ellutia, has opened a dedicated training centre at its new state-of-the-art facility in Ely, Cambridgeshire. The GC Excellence Academy will host training courses by RSC-approved independent trainer, Anthias Consulting, as well as Ellutia-led sessions by the company’s technical experts.
Kicking off the Academy’s programme, Anthias Consulting will be delivering its 1 day course ‘The absolute basics of GC and GC-MS’ and its more involved ‘5 day complete GC and GC-MS training’ in January 2018. Ellutia’s experts will offer a range of sessions, some of which will be bespoke for customers and others that will cover key application areas including: brewing, cannabis testing, food safety, petrochemical, and environmental analysis. Courses will also be offered on cutting edge technologies such as Ultra-Fast GC and MAX GC-FTIR.
Andrew James, Ellutia’s Marketing Director commented: “Mastering the use of modern gas chromatography instruments and maximising their potential is a key objective for scientists, students and researchers alike. Our deep heritage and expertise in GC techniques and our incredibly close relationships with customers mean that we place as much emphasis on equipping GC users with the insight they need, as we do on developing great products. We are looking forward to offering a range of courses at our new GC Excellence Academy to provide insights and training to customers, students and other scientists with the goal of advancing GC knowledge and expanding the use of this highly versatile technique.”
The Academy is housed at Ellutia’s new premises at Lancaster Way Business Park, Ely, which covers 15,000 sq. ft. The investment made in the site supports the company’s vision to be a world leader in the design and production of innovative and unique gas chromatography instruments.
Anthias Consulting is the world’s leading independent authority on Gas Chromatography (GC, GCxGC), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Liquid Chromatography (HPLC, UHPLC, LCxLC), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES or ICP-AES), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP- MS), Spectroscopy (IR, UV/Vis, AA) and all related techniques.
