TOC analysis of solid and liquid samples in one device for environmental applications
Analytik Jena’s multi N/C duo is an analyser that considerably simplifies TOC analysis (total organic carbon). For the first time, it is possible to analyse solid and liquid samples using one single device highly automated and without laborious equipment conversion.
The multi N/C duo is designed particularly for labs in the environmental sector that see themselves confronted with an increasing number of solid and liquid samples. Automation and high quality of analysis are brought together harmoniously by the device with additional ease of use for the operator. The instrument is the ideal solution for TOC analysis of contaminated soil, biowaste, dust, ashes and other solid environmental samples as well as water samples of any kind.
Thanks to its high degree of automation, the new TOC analyzer of modular design can process up to 48 solid samples in less than four hours. Add to this the highly automated and clean handling of liquid samples, with up to 146 samples per sequence and parallel purge and analysis in NPOC operations. Switching between the solid and liquid mode takes only a few mouse clicks. In order to measure solid matter, the multi N/C duo uses a robust, catalyst-free oxidation technique, which makes a considerable contribution towards reduced running costs. Furthermore, low-wear ceramic components make the combustion system of the analyser particularly low-maintenance. Solid sample weights in the gram range compensate for the inhomogeneity of samples, thus increasing the reproducibility of the analysis results.

Automated online µSPE clean-up for QuEChERS approach to pesticides analysis
See how Thermo Scientific’s automated µSPE (micro Solid PhaseExtraction) on their TriPlus™ RSH Autosampler enables scientists to gainreliable, high throughput operations for GC-MS analysis of pesticides in a wide variety of food matrices, even those with high lipid contents.
Key benefits of replacing manual clean- up procedures with a fully automated
on-line approach is theefficiency of the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) extraction while offeringthe benefits of eliminating human errors and scaling down sample volume and solvent consumption.
Other key benefits of automated online µSPE include:Lower % RSDs and higher % recoveries comparedwith manual d-SPE, leading to more reliable quantitation of targets analytes,More efficient removal ofmatrix co-extractives for higher selectivity and sensitivity,Improved robustness as demonstrated by%RSDs lower than 10% during the LC-MS/MS analysis of 200 consecutive injections of teaextracts,Unattended operation and time savings compared to manual d-SPE,Improved productivity with a decrease in system maintenance and increased instrument uptime, excellent results even with entry- level triple quadrupole MS systems and finally unified clean-up operations for improved efficiency inroutine testing laboratories.

Online wastewater analysis for the determination of mercury, arsenic and selenium at trace concentrations, using atomic fluorescence spectrometry
Mercury, arsenic and selenium are considered environmental priority pollutants and the determination of these metals in wastewater from industrial sources is a challenging application. In recent years wastewater treatment plants have been installing technologies to capture and remove the metals. The efficiency of these treatment processes needs to be monitored using accurate analytical systems.
Many industrial processes require wastewater monitoring for these elements including thermal coal power generation (FGD wastewater), oil and gas refineries (produced/desalter water), smelting plants, semiconductor fabrication, incineration wastewater and chor-alkali plants. The targeted sample matrices are often quite difficult to manage so any online approach must be capable of handling a variety of complex waste waters.
It is widely accepted that online analysers offer some major operational and cost benefits compared to traditional laboratory analysis. Not only does the online solution offer improved efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of data but also lower operating costs and labour saving and safety through automation. Unlike laboratory methods, online analysers have no data gaps – as they offer 24/7 analysis and real time results with pre-set alarms to enable a rapid reaction when a problem is detected.

Comprehensive Environmental Mass Spectrometry
Comprehensive Environmental Mass Spectrometry describes in full colour the power of mass spectrometry in resolving environmental issues and demonstrating how real-world complex problems can be solved in a simple and elegant way.
The book begins with the general principles of mass spectrometry, then proceeds to describe a range of techniques including imaging, ambient mass spectrometry, miniaturisation and isotope ratio mass spectrometry. A variety of applications are covered, including different types of environmental pollutants, such as emerging contaminants, pesticides, volatile organic pollutants, persistent halogenated compounds, drinking water disinfection by-products and atmospheric aerosols, as well as the new discipline of petroleomics.
Aimed at both novice and experienced mass spectrometrists, each chapter is in the form of an easy-to-read tutorial and contains case studies with examples of real environmental problems and solutions. Essential reading for environmental scientists, this book is also relevant to those in other disciplines such as biologists, geologists, forensic scientists and petrochemists and is available in print or as an eBook.
