44 AIRMONITORING A revolutionary sensor-based air quality monitor
After 7 years designing and deploying small air quality stations all over the world, Kunak Technologies, has presented the new Kunak AIR Pro, a huge evolution of their previous sensor-based air quality monitoring station, designed to solve all the lifecycle challenges of an air quality product, its operation and maintenance. Kunak AIR Pro is a small, multi-pollutant, patent-pending air quality station for measuring CO, CO2
, NO, NO2 , O3 , SO2 , H2 S, NH3, VOCs, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 and environmental data like temperature, humidity and pressure, and offers the possibility of connecting external sensors & probes through various connectors.
As they say, this is “the most advanced air quality monitoring station on the market”. It includes some innovations never seen before like its plug & play smart gas cartridges, its autonomous operation thanks to the solar panel, the wireless data transmission in real-time, the remote easy calibration tool, and the Kunak Cloud software, a web-based cloud platform to visualise, analyse and manage the data, and many more.
All those characteristics make this new station one of the most innovative products on the outdoor air quality monitoring market.
Thanks to the company’s extensive experience working with gas sensors, Kunak innovations solve many of the known issues of sensor technology: cross-sensibility, temperature effects, sensor variability, factory and field calibration, sensor replacement, networks operation and maintenance. Between its innovations, you will find the new system called GasPlugTM
for the replacement. With GasPlugTM
, all the cartridges have the same size and fit in any of the five available sockets, to target specific applications and campaign needs. The electronics in the cartridge indicates storage type, age, and factory calibration. This instrument offers real plug & play: when the new cartridge is plugged, the base station reads the information, configures itself, and starts working. GasPlugTM
.
Also features auto-diagnosis and auto-invalidation: a notification is sent when it is time to replace the sensor or when any malfunction is detected, invalidating the data. Cartridges are quick and easy to replace and can be done on the field in less than five minutes without opening the device or sending it off to the factory. In addition, QA and QC criteria is met because of individual cartridge factory calibration against traceable reference standards.
Kunak Smart Gas Cartridges guarantees measurement control throughout the lifecycle of each sensor, making Kunak AIR Pro more sustainable; and making the life of the clients easier. Kunak AIR Pro does not require external reference data to calculate gas or particle concentrations. Zero and span calibration can be done via Kunak Cloud, the web-based software.
Designed to cover all needs: With a low-cost of ownership and accurate measurement of target pollutants, Kunak AIR Pro is useful for cities, industries, and researchers that need to make better decisions based on supplementary systems with larger & accurate data. In addition, this new version will offer higher performance and greater autonomy and is easier to use. This means placement is simple. Thanks to a plug-and-play system, the user can buy the Kunak AIR Pro and start using it quickly. More information online:

Smiths Detection have announced that its BioFlash® Biological Identifier is capable of detecting SARS-CoV-2 in the air following tests conducted by the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).
The tests were performed using live SARS-CoV-2 virus in a Biosafety Level 3 containment area at Fort Detrick, Maryland. The SARS-CoV-2 CANARY biosensor used in the BioFlash device demonstrated that it can quickly detect and identify the presence of low levels of aerosolized SARS-CoV-2.
The BioFlash® Biological Identifier is powered by Canary® and specific identification of biological-threat agents including viruses, toxins and bacteria.
“We are working incredibly hard to provide a tool that will support the ongoing fight against the coronavirus,” said Roland Carter, President, Smiths Detection. “BioFlash is an effective and trusted environmental monitoring tool. These test results provide valuable data in understanding the spread of COVID-19 and help protect people in indoor environments such as hospitals, schools and commercial buildings.”
USAMRIID confirmed that Smiths Detection’s BioFlash can detect down to an estimated 6,000 airborne infectious particles of the SARS-CoV-2 virus within a controlled environment. This compares to as many as one million particles emitted in a single sneeze by a person infected with SARS-CoV-2. The test results also indicate no cross-reactivity with influenza and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), an important consideration for environmental monitoring of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Further testing and research is underway at a number of US universities to collect more data on how the detection technology can help prevent outbreaks and guide both public and private organizations in COVID-19 mitigation strategies.

When constructing its biogas plants, one of the top 5 German companies in the renewable energy sector pays attention not only to modern process technology, but also to reliable methane gas monitoring. During the fermentation process, gas leaks can occur at any time and cause catastrophic damage in the event of ignition. For the production of biogas, farm animal waste is mixed with plants. The mixture is processed into a kind of liquid manure in the corresponding fermentation plant. Millions of bacteria now swarm in this mixture and slowly decompose it. This process causes methane gas to form.

The microprocessor-based gas sensor with output signal as well as alarm and fault relays (all SIL2 certified) monitors the ambient air for combustible gases and vapours by means of a catalytic pellistor sensor element. The 4–20 mA / RS-485 Modbus output signal makes the sensor suitable for connection to the PolyGard® automation devices. As an option, the PolyXeta®
e.g. for alarm thresholds and relay assignments, is possible as well.
Re-calibration on site - For PolyXeta2 sensors from MSR-Electronic without LCD, calibration is performed via the handy calibration device STL06-PGX2 or the PC software PCE06-PGX2. Sensors with LCD have an integrated calibration routine that is started from the outside with a permanent magnet without opening the housing. For sensors with LCD, the background lighting changes from green to red in case of alarm or error. The exchangeable sensors thus enable simple and time-saving calibration on site.
