Health & Safety 41 New Spectrometer for Bomb Detection

Avantes (Netherlands) has been selected as supplier for the OPTIX project (Optical Technologies for the Identification of explosives). The objective is to develop a transportable system for the standoff detection and identification of explosives, using LIBS, Raman and IR spectroscopy. Avantes will supply newly developed systems. The project is funded by the European Commission.

Benno Oderkerk, Avantes’ technical director: “Avantes has always focused on high quality, customisable miniature spectrometers. We have been selected for the OPTIX project based on our vast experience in customer specific optical systems. We will develop new systems with our partners in this project, including the Universities of Malaga, Dortmund, Vienna, Clausthal and the Spanish Guarda Civil.”

The OPTIX project has been launched to possibly prevent terrorist attacks, as those in New York (2001), Madrid (2004) and London (2005). About 60% of these attacks have been carried out by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and therefore the detection has been given a high priority to contribute to the security of European citizens.

Oderkerk: “Spectrometers have proven to accurately detect even the smallest traces of substances. We will be developing a combined system of LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy), Raman systems and IR absorption. Together, they give an accurate description of the unknown substance being investigated. Avantes is proud to be selected for such a prestigious project and we expect the first tests and results soon.

Thermocouple Data Logger Provides Cost-effective and Versatile Monitoring

PSE (Gernmany), distributor of Tinytag data loggers is proud to announce the launch of a new thermocouple data logger. Tinytags have an established reputation for accuracy and reliability across many industries; the new thermocouple logger provides monitoring for a broad spectrum of temperature ranges and is highly versatile, enhancing the choice of solutions available and meeting the specific demands of many applications and industries.

The new TGU-4550 Tinytag Ultra 2 Thermocouple data logger offers all the recognised benefits of thermocouple temperature monitoring – fast response, versatility, cost-effectiveness and ease of use. The unit supports the most popular thermocouples types – K, J, T and N – providing monitoring for temperature ranges from -200°C to 1350°C, depending on the type being used. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, including the accurate monitoring standards demanded by the food processing industry, to the extremes of temperature experienced in hot industrial processes such as smelting, right through to conditions experienced in freezers. Thermocouples are available either as bare wire, offering lower cost and faster response times, or built into probes designed for specific uses depending on their type of construction or insulation material used. The logger also has a built-in temperature channel allowing the particular process and the ambient air temperature to be monitored simultaneously.

Furthermore, the new Tinytag thermocouple logger offers additional versatility by incorporating a connection that supports both standard and miniature thermocouple plugs. The unit features burn out response – the option to configure the logger to drive readings either low or high in the event of thermocouple failure, making it obvious to the user that a problem has occurred. The compact, stand- alone logger has a battery that lasts for over a year, and like all Tinytag products it is compatible with the easy to use Tinytag Explorer software. Data is downloaded to a PC via a USB connection where the software clearly presents the data as graphs and tables.

PPM Technology (UK), a specialist gas detection and indoor air quality instrumentation manufacturer from Wales has developed a range of multi-parameter indoor air quality monitoring equipment.

In order to accurately understand a building’s indoor air quality, it is advised to simultaneously monitor various indoor air quality parameters including gases, temperature and humidity in various locations throughout the building.

PPM Technology’s range of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring instruments include the Wireless IAQ Profile Monitor it can contain sensors for a maximum of 7 customer specified IAQ parameters. A compact model - the Mini IAQ Profile Monitor can contain a maximum of 5 sensors.

Both these instruments send the collected IAQ data wirelessly to the control pc/laptop in real-time; a large number of units can be networked together to enable accurate monitoring of an entire building. The PPMonitor software enables the data to be viewed graphically, produce reports and statistical data, run schedules as well as alarm functions and notifications for more effective and economical building management.

Our latest instrument the 'Touch Screen' IAQ Profile Monitor is a stand-alone IAQ monitoring unit, capable of continuously monitoring up to 7 IAQ parameters. It is built with an integrated ‘touch screen’ panel, which allows the user to navigate through the various sensors simply by touching the screen.
