Ocean Optics Announces 2011 Video and Photo Contest Winners


After several months of competition, Ocean Optics (USA) has chosen the winners of its 2011 global video and photo contest. The Grand Prize in the video category was awarded to John Giddings, for his entry Telelumen at Mt. Fuji Summit, GOT IT!. In the photo category, Field Plot of Dreams, submitted by Mina Talajoor, took the Grand Prize.


To create the winning video, Giddings made an arduous two- day trek to the summit of Japan’s Mt. Fuji. Using two Ocean Optics’


USB4000 spectrometers he captured spectral data of the light at the top of the summit from dawn to dusk over three days. The short video captures Giddings’ first impressions of the “Spiritual Light” of the Mt. Fuji sunrise -the fabled sunrise which earned Japan the moniker “The Land of the Rising Sun.”


Axel Emmermann (a repeat Runner-Up winner from 2010), was awarded the First Runner-Up video prize for Jaz - The Versatile One, demonstrating how to customize the slit size on Ocean Optics’ Jaz spectrometer. Winner of the Runner-Up prize, Bill Hughes, enlisted the help of his students at Park Forest Middle School to create The Archaic Technology Blues, illustrating the need for Ocean Optics’ equipment to engage his tech- savvy students.


The Grand Prize photo, Field Plot of Dreams, from Mina Talajoor and researchers Duke Pauli and Jay Kalous, documents a project aimed at combating world hunger. Using the Jaz spectrometer, the group is measuring light reflected off the canopies of wheat and barley to identify plants with the most advantageous characteristics for breeding.

Diffusion Tubes for Trace Concentration Standards of Solids and Viscous Liquids


Diffusion Tubes have been used for many years as an inexpensive, do-it-yourself way to dynamically blend trace concentration gas mixtures for a large number of common solvents. Typical diffusion tubes have a glass reservoir attached to the end of a precision bore capillary tube. Solvent liquid is injected into the reservoir through the capillary bore. Solvent emission is controlled by diffusive flow through the capillary and adjusted by choice of capillary bore, length and operating temperature.


KIN-TEK’s (USA) Trace Source™ Configurable Diffusion Tubes extend the range of compounds that can be used to include subliming solids and viscous liquids. These tubes have a removable reservoir that allows filling with the capillary removed, so the component compound can be any consistency. Additionally, a variety of pre- configured and tested capillaries can be interchangeably fitted to the reservoir adjust the range of concentrations obtainable.


Multiple tubes can be used simultaneously in the FlexStream™ Automated Gas Standards Generating System to create multi-component gas mixtures.

Soil Moisture plus Temperature Sensor

New Digital Economy Polarimeter


Kruss Optronic (Germany) are very proud of their Polarimeter P8000 because "it’s the fastest polarimeter worldwide!". Krüss developed a high-speed measurement that reduces measuring time to just 1 second irrespective of the angle of the sample.


The P3000 operates just as fast as its big brother; an intuitive touch screen with basic functions has been implemented as well.


For industries or applications which don’t need more than 2 digits after the decimal point and perform standardised measuring, the P3000 offers excellent value for money!
