Water simplifi ed for every step of the water monitoring process – Find out how at WWEM 2024

River Thames pollution levels found to be at

harmful levels by environmental action groups Surfers Against Sewage are among the environmental campaigners that have tested 24 sites to the west of London, since March 2024. A total of 210 tests have been carried out with 47 of these indicating excessive levels of e-coli and intestinal enterococci.

Water pollution caused by illegal discharges into river has been widely reported in the UK over recent years – there have also been instances when the sewage system is overstretched, due to heavy rainfall. Thames Water has stated that the company is “committed to seeing our waterways thrive” and is making improvements at 250 sites to help minimise overfl ow discharges.

Offi cial reports have shown that the amount of time in which sewage was dumped into the Thames have more than quadrupled in the last year. Plans by Thames Water to take more water from the river at Teddington, voted as the ‘best place to live in London in 2023 by the Sunday Times, and replace that water with recycled sewage effl uent from the nearby Mogden treatment works, based in Isleworth, has attracted signifi cant opposition.

A Thames Water spokesperson stated, “While all storm discharges are unacceptable, the sewage system was historically designed to work in this way, to prevent sewage backing up into people’s homes.”

200 site upgrades are under way including a £100m upgrade of the Mogden sewage treatment works, which the spokesperson claimed would increase treatment capacity and reduce storm discharges.

In-Situ got its start developing the fi rst all- in-one datalogger/transducer/temperature sensor for self-contained long-term groundwater monitoring. Though they expanded to offer comprehensive monitoring solutions in groundwater, surface water, aquaculture, coastal, drinking water and wastewater applications, innovation remains central to In-Situ’s R&D efforts.

Rugged multiparameter instrumentation, full smart-sensor portfolio, and user-friendly software for simplifi ed setup, calibration and data access set In-Situ apart in the environmental market. Powerful telemetry and a robust data services platform give customers unprecedented control over how they view their data and manage their sites. And instant, secure fi le backup from the VuSitu app to HydroVu data services makes us the fi rst water monitoring company to introduce cloud connectivity to In-Situ’s software.

Strategic acquisitions in the U.S. and abroad have expanded In-Situ’s product offerings to include industrial-grade water analysis and measurement technologies for wastewater and drinking water treatment process control. High-accuracy chemical analysis systems, in- tank monitoring instrumentation and portable solutions for offl ine monitoring deliver reliable data for a low long-term cost of ownership.

The In-Situ tagline, “water simplifi ed.,” captures the company’s mission: to simplify every step of the water monitoring process, so our customers are confi dent in their data and decision making. Visit WWEM, stand G4, to learn more.

Extraction of organic pollutants in environmental samples – twelve application reports

For More Info, email: email:

The EPA test methods for evaluating solid waste (SW-846) provide a comprehensive source of information on sampling, sample preparation, analysis, and reporting. EPA 3546 was formally included in SW-846 and is a microwave assisted solvent extraction (MASE) procedure for extracting water insoluble or slightly water soluble organic compounds such as organochlorine pesticides, semivolatile organics, PAHs, PCBs, phenoxyacid herbicides, phenols, dioxins, and furans from soils, clays, sediments, sludges, and solid waste.

The above compounds were traditionally extracted using lengthy methods that required large volumes of solvents. MASE is a rapid sample preparation technique that enables effi cient extractions but using reduced amounts of solvents with the ability of working at higher temperatures and pressures. For example, the Milestone Ethos X microwave extraction system from Analytix can extract the target compounds from environmental samples in full compliance with EPA 3546 (100-115 °C and 50-150 psi) and is capable of quickly processing up to 24 samples and 30 g of sample per vessel simultaneously thereby improving the limit of quantitation (LOQ) for analysis. This results in the capacity to extract over 200 samples in an 8-hour workday and the potential problems of contamination, memory effects, and cleaning are eliminated due to the use of disposable glass vials.

Twelve application reports highlighting the advantages of MASE for environmental samples are available from Analytix that demonstrate the recoveries of certifi ed environmental standard materials being in compliance with the certifi cate values. In addition it demonstrates that a wide range of different compounds can be completely extracted, even in large sample amounts.

The use of disposable glass vials coupled with speed of extraction and reduced solvent consumption makes the Ethos X a unique and innovative solution for the extraction of contaminants from environmental samples, providing unmatched ease of use and low running costs.
