Revolutionary autonomous aquatic eDNA sampling solution for marine and freshwater applications
NatureMetrics and Dartmouth Ocean Technologies (DOT) have announced the commercial launch of the DOT-NM Autosampler. This cutting-edge system enables the autonomous collection of eDNA samples from marine and freshwater environments to provide comprehensive biodiversity insights at an unprecedented scale.
The DOT-NM Autosampler addresses a critical bottleneck in aquatic environmental monitoring by autonomously sampling eDNA - genetic material naturally shed into waters by organisms - over extended deployments without requiring labour-intensive vessel-based campaigns. This groundbreaking capability unlocks safe, cost-effective, and
continuous biodiversity data collection, even in the most remote aquatic locations.
After rigorous validation, the autosampler has proven to generate eDNA data with equivalent species detection and biodiversity resolution to conventional manual sampling methods performed by human crews. Leading environmental survey provider Fugro is now planning commercial deployments, leveraging its autonomous sampling capabilities over multi-month offshore campaigns to reduce operational costs signifi cantly compared to cyclic vessel-based surveys.
The autosampler seamlessly integrates with NatureMetrics’ end-to-end nature intelligence reporting workfl ow powered by eDNA technology and cutting-edge bioinformatics. Following autonomous sample collection utilising NatureMetrics’ proprietary eDNA fi lter technology, samples are processed through a state-of-the-art eDNA laboratory. The resultant data is then analysed using NatureMetrics’ pioneering DNA metabarcoding pipelines to identify species in the study area. Comprehensive biodiversity insights are delivered to clients via the NatureMetrics Intelligence Platform, featuring interactive data visualization and reporting tools tailored for environmental decision-making.
This integrated online solution not only simplifi es marine and freshwater environmental monitoring programs by replacing often complex logistical supply chains, but provides practitioners with auditable, actionable datasets - fi nally aligning the biological data collection with the spatial and temporal resolutions required for robust environmental management.
Myron L®
Company Ultrameter II 6PFCE The 6PFCE
features a comprehensive suite of in-situ water quality analysis tools
designed to replace more costly and less convenient laboratory equipment. A true one-handed instrument, the 6PFCE
Unlike other similar meters, 6PFCE delivers Conductivity, Resistivity, TDS, pH,
ORP, Free Chlorine Equivalent (FCE™), and Temperature readings quickly and easily with the press of a button.
Conductivity and TDS functions allow you
to select the solution type used to model the solution under test: KCl; NaCl; Myron L’s own 442 Natural Water™ Standard; or USER, programmable by you to model a known solution. The result is benchtop accuracy of ±1% of reading in a handheld instrument. Accuracy increases to ±.1% of reading at calibration point. Temperature compensation is automatic to 25°C or can be disabled by the user as required. Autoranging capabilities provide increased reading resolution across a broad range of applications.
pH readings are also temperature compensated, and you can choose to perform a 1-, 2-, or 3-point calibration depending on the range of samples measured to achieve ±.01pH accuracy. The pH sensor is of a proprietary construction and
includes a large potassium chloride solution reservoir for long life. Myron L pH sensors are also user replaceable. ORP readings utilize a 99.9% pure platinum electrode and a reference junction that is shared with the pH sensor. 6PFCE In addition, the 6PFCE
Calibration and maintenance are simple, so the 6PFCE can be serviced by the user. The 6PFCE
submersible, and buoyant. Plus, Myron L service and technical support are included for the life of the product. More information online:

Leveraging DOT’s expertise in designing rugged oceanographic instrumentation, the autosampler system is engineered for reliable operations across a diverse range of conditions in aquatic environments. The autosampler provides autonomous collection of up to 9 consecutive 5-litre eDNA samples per deployment and features user-confi gurable sample timing and volume settings based on study requirements. This user-friendly device performs automatic sample preservation and self-cleaning routines between samples and has three depth rating options for 20m, 200m and 2000m deployments. The DOT-NM Autosampler can be deployed from a vessel, a static mooring or integrated with drones or AUVs and is ideal for a host of applications, including marine conservation, offshore energy, aquaculture and wastewater monitoring
By unlocking systematic, repeated eDNA sampling, the DOT-NM Autosampler captures a holistic biodiversity picture previously unattainable through intermittent, patchy surveys. This includes detecting migratory and nocturnal species and resolving ecosystem changes over time, which are crucial environmental baselines for effective monitoring and management programs.
With signifi cantly reduced HSE exposure, cost, and carbon footprint savings compared to manual surveys and proven data quality, the DOT-NM Autosampler is poised to drive the proliferation of eDNA-based biodiversity measurement across industries.
