A signifi cant breakthrough in water analysis technology
Affi nity Water has announced a signifi cant advancement in water analysis with the development of a segmented fl ow system for the precise measurement of Total Cyanide in drinking water and natural waters. This innovative system, utilising an on-line UV digestion module and amperometric detection by Systea®, was supplied by Lab Solutions, and ensures accurate and reliable results.
The World Health Organization (WHO) underscores the critical importance of stringent cyanide monitoring due to its acute toxicity. The Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations prescribe a limit of 50 µg/L for total cyanide in drinking water, which is considerably lower than the WHO’s short-term exposure health-based value.
To meet these stringent regulatory requirements, Affi nity Water laboratories have selected the Systea® analyser, employing the ASTM D7511-09E2 method. This method involves UV digestion to break down complex cyanides into CN- ions, followed by amperometric detection for precise measurement.
A crucial aspect of this method’s success is the use of thiosulphate as a dechlorinating agent, ensuring accurate results even in waters disinfected using chloramination. The method boasts a working range of 0-20 µg/L and a low limit of quantifi cation of 28 µg/L.
Affi nity Water is committed to maintaining the highest water quality standards and is in the process of accrediting this method under ISO 17025- DWTS. This demonstrates the company’s dedication to providing safe and high-quality drinking water to its consumers.

PerkinElmer are delighted to announce their second Microplastic Symposium, this year hosted at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton on 13 and 14 November 2024.
Join leading microplastics experts as they present their research on microplastics analysis methods and explore the profound effects microplastics are having on our bodies, wildlife, and the environment.
A plethora of research studies have shown that microplastics are now ubiquitous in our lives and environment. From the depths of our oceans to the top of our mountains and even in some of the most untouched corners of the globe, microplastics are being detected everywhere.
The potentially damaging impacts of microplastics on health and the environment are still far from fully understood. Therefore, arming scientists with the necessary training, techniques, and equipment to be able to interrogate and fi nd answers to these issues is key.
With more than 85 years of delivering analytical solutions, PerkinElmer is a trusted partner for your microplastics analysis and research needs. Our comprehensive and innovative solutions will help you to better identify and quantitate microplastics as well as measure their biological impact on the marine and freshwater ecosystems and the food chain.
During the symposium, in addition to plenary presentations, the packed agenda will also include optional hands-on practical workshops, providing attendees with insights on how best to approach their sampling preparation methods based upon the desired outcome. Topics covered will be sampling techniques such as digestion and density separation and fi ltration.
Don’t miss this informative event, which offers ample networking time and the chance to present your research and/or display a poster.
