A novel chemiluminescence- based detection method for the fi ght against E.coli and coliforms

Swiss Diagnostic Start-up NEMIS Technologies announces working on the development of rapid screening tests to detect E. coli in food safety settings

“With our NEMIS solution based on the AquaSparkTM technology, on-site screening has never been so easy”, Mario Hupfeld, Chief Scientifi c Offi cer stated. “We validated our concept over the last year on Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella, where we expect to start the AOAC certifi cation process in fall.”

NEMIS uses molecules emitting a bright chemiluminescent light which is triggered specifi cally by the target bacteria and gives a reliable and strong signal in presence of viable cells. First applications are environmental swab tests, although for E. coli and coliform detection the company works on more user formats. All tests are done without sample preparation, on-site, and give specifi c results in one shift depending on the pathogen. “It is an exciting opportunity for us to broaden our product portfolio with an E. coli and coliform detection test with a market launch planned in 2021”, CEO Arnaud Muller adds.

Pesticide sampler scoops environmental technology award

The Ministry of Environment of Baden-Württemberg, in Germany, has awarded the Environmental Technology Prize for the sixth time. Among this year’s winners were MAXX Mess und Probenahmetechnik who, after many weeks of intense and hard work, were delighted to receive an award for their pesticide sampler in the ‘Process Measuring & Control’ category.

The device is used for event-triggered automatic water sampling in agriculture areas. The instrument fi nds out how much the run-off water of these areas is loaded by pesticides etc. after heavy rainfall. This sampler represents a new, unique combination of particle sampling, liquid sampling and large-volume-solid-phase extraction (LVSPE). Although the unit is battery driven, it can handle long stand-by-times of several months and even cool the liquid sample after collection.

It is almost tamper proof and equipped with a GPS-tracker. A SMS unit notifi es the operator automatically when a rain event has happened and the sampling program has been activated.

Solinst bladder pumps provide excellent performance and reliability—especially when sampling for VOCs. The bladder pump comes standard with a durable PTFE bladder, which ensures that drive air or gas does not contact the sample, thus avoiding degassing or contamination of the sample. Solinst bladder pumps are great for low fl ow and regular sampling. Stainless steel pumps can sample from up to 150 m (500 ft.).
