Gas Detection Teledyne completes acquisition of the gas and flame detection business of 3M
Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) (“Teledyne”) announced on the 1st of August 2019, the successful completion of the previously announced acquisition by Teledyne of the Gas and Flame Detection business of 3M for $230 million in cash. The gas and flame detection business includes Oldham, Simtronics, Gas Measurement Instruments (GMI), Detcon and select Scott Safety products. “We have now completed two corporate carve-out acquisitions in 2019, and we closed each transaction within two months of announcement.” The gas and flame detection business provides a portfolio of fixed and portable industrial gas and flame detection instruments used in a variety of industries including petrochemical, power generation, oil & gas, food & beverage, mining and waste water treatment. The Oldham, Simtronics, GMI and Detcon brands bring together over 100 years of industry experience across a wide range of standard products and customised solutions. These rugged trace gas analysers feature fast response time, intrinsically-safe sensors and satisfy multiple international certification standards. “We are excited to welcome this new core business and its employees to Teledyne. The gas and flame detection business utilises similar technology and serves related markets as our portfolio of environmental instrumentation businesses. However, our respective products do not compete and we generally serve customers in complementary geographies,” said Robert Mehrabian, Executive Chairman of Teledyne. “We have now completed two corporate carve-out acquisitions in 2019, and we closed each transaction within two months of announcement.”Teledyne management expects the transaction to be accretive to GAAP earnings per share in the first year after the acquisition.

Since March 2019 Teledyne Gas & Flame’s most popular portable multi-gas detector, the PS200 features some impressive product enhancements. One such improvement is as a powerful new datalogging capacity that will enable customers to capture all relevant calibration data within a 6-month period. This increased capacity will improve customers access to relevant data over a longer time period whilst enabling quicker decisions to be made.
Another helpful addition is the new quick-press field calibration mode which will save customers time by simplifying the field calibration process. Customers will also be able to visualise STEL / LTEL readings on-screen and log these in our software package to improve compliance monitoring.
Lastly, we have added a bundle of user experience upgrades including a quick information press when off; configurable confidence beeps; and increased user control around calibration due dates, dead-band configurations, and resolution settings (H2S). These features combined will enhance performance; improve ease-of use; and importantly enrich the overall user experience.
The PS200 forms part of Teledyne Gas & Flame industrial portables portfolio which includes a range of gas detectors designed to keep workers safe in challenging environments. Other industrial portable products include the Protégé ZM (Zero Maintenance) and SG (Single-Gas), a range of single-gas disposable and reusable solutions, and the popular PS500, an up-to-5 gas monitor for more exotic environments and applications.

Intelligent and versatile gas detection technology is low maintenance and simply to install
Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection’s MultiTox DGi-TT7-E is an intelligent gas detector utilising a range of different types of sensor. This detector has been designed to make operation and maintenance simple. The DGi -TT7-E is made from a common housing and electronics with the detection capabilities being determined which sensor, or cartridge is used. A comprehensive assortment of cells are available which are intrinsically safe protected and can be replaced while the detector is in operation, thus minimising system down time. These intelligent, microprocessor driven units are fully configurable when using a wireless hand-held terminal (TLU) or use of the hard wired HART option which offers total flexibility for installation as well as lower service costs. Relay operation and alarm levels are all set through the TLU which is a hazardous area approved hand-held unit. The unit may be interfaced directly with a wide range of panels, controllers and PLC’s etc. Its integral daylight readable alphanumeric display indicates local status and alarm level. Due to the hot swat field cabling technology, sensors can be swapped in a hazardous area without the need for area declassification. The detector features optional HART Protocol 7th edition output thus enabling full configuration and diagnostics over non-proprietary interface.

Teledyne’s Gas and Flame Detection’s MultiFlame DF-TV7–T is a multi-spectrum IR flame detector that uses three wavelengths. This detector responds to hydrocarbon fires and is the best choice for operation in dirty, industrial environments or for detecting smoky fires. The MultiFlame DF-TV7–T is designed to detect and respond to unwanted hydrocarbon fires, whilst keeping up a high level of false alarm immunity. This detector operates at a long range of 80 meters with a 120° line of sight and also performs continuous automatic inspections of the optical lens.
This unit features a wide variety of output options as standard and is certified for operation in SIL 3 applications. The detector can be interfaced directly with an extensive range of fire panels, controllers and PLC’s etc. MultiFlame DF-TV7–T is fully configurable via a wireless hand-held terminal (TLU600) or alternatively with HART (TM) giving more choice and flexibility to installers. Time delays, sensitivity and output configuration are set up by using the TLU; a hazardous area approved hand- held unit. Wireless testing of the optical and output circuits can be carried out by using the TLU for assured ease of maintenance.
