New partnership in waste pile management solutions


Ashtead Technology has been appointed as the exclusive distributor in the UK and Ireland for two innovative products that help waste managers improve composting effi ciency; prevent waste fi res; avoid odour complaints; protect the environment, and comply with the latest regulations.


Developed by Freeland Scientifi c, ‘CompostManager’ is a complete system for managing the composting process, and ‘smarTprobe’ is a temperature monitoring system for compost and other wastes where overheating and fi re represent a potential hazard. Both systems employ the Best Available Techniques (BAT) required by the Environment Agency.


CompostManager consists of a portable probe and measurement system that records the key factors affecting composting effi ciency: temperature, moisture, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Collected data is uploaded to a website which provides suggested management instructions such as ‘Turn’, ‘Irrigate’ and ‘Leave Alone.’


The smarTprobe system consists of robust temperature probes that are inserted into piles of bulk materials that have the potential to catch fi re. A colour-coded display enables users to check the temperature profi les of their waste piles, and the system automatically issues warnings before dangerous conditions arise. With around 300 signifi cant fi res at waste sites every year, the potential for the smarTprobe system is enormous if these fi res are to be prevented.

OTT HydroMet has launched a new all-in-one wireless water level logger that can be used for the remote monitoring of surface or groundwater. Simple to set up and run with a mobile phone, the OTT ecoLog 1000 has been designed for long-term applications, even in remote locations, and is able to issue warnings automatically to help manage or avoid the problematic conditions that can occur when water levels rise.


“Our customers are already walking around with an incredible piece of technology in their pockets,” comments OTT’s UK managing director Nigel Grimsley. “So it makes sense to exploit the value of this by developing an App that can be used to set up, manage and view data, and by designing a water level monitor that communicates wirelessly with a mobile phone or tablet.”


The App runs on mobile devices supporting iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows 10, and with integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication, the ecoLog 1000 can pair with a mobile device up to 10 metres away, which signifi cantly enhances simplicity and onsite safety. Further enhancements to onsite operations include the ability to quickly change batteries, and even shorten cable lengths if necessary.


An on-board SIM card enables the monitor to feed data to secure servers, and users are provided with password protected access to the readings via the App. However, in addition to viewing and downloading data, the App also enables users to manage the ecoLog’s confi guration remotely.


For monitoring network operators, a further App- based solution, HydroMet Cloud, offers web-based data visualisation of live monitoring data in user- defi ned maps, graphs, tables etc.


With a rugged stainless steel probe (also suitable for brackish and saline water) and a very stable ceramic pressure cell, the ecoLog 1000 is designed for challenging applications. Data are encrypted with automatic retries if transmission fails, so users can expect continuous data streams with alerts when water approaches user-set threshold levels.


Commenting on the applications for the instrument, Nigel says: “A wide range of people would benefi t from remote water level data and alerts; these include government agencies, fl ood managers, local communities, highway managers, rail network operators, water companies and water resource managers, as well as consultants, academics and environmental researchers.


“For all of these groups, easy access to remote data will save a great deal of time and money by preventing unnecessary site visits, and the provision of water level alarms will facilitate the instigation of timely mitigation measures.”

Real-time data whenever and wherever you need it Measure and demonstrate the performance of your dust management controls


Construction demolition and earthworks have the potential to release large amounts of dust into the air, which can have a signifi cant impact on the local air quality. These events need to be measured accurately so as to ensure mitigation measures are performing effectively. Often construction takes place close to household residents or ecologically sensitive areas giving rise to the need for real-time monitoring. If an area already has a problem with high levels of PM10 or PM2.5 then it will almost certainly need an air quality monitoring scheme/plan to measure the dust emissions released into the local air.


Having the ability to accurately measure PM10 and PM2.5 in real-time whilst capturing and making that data readily available to other users is fast becoming the norm. Giving access to multiple stakeholders via a cloud analytics platform enables construction site operators to keep everyone informed about the performance of the dust management controls in place.


When choosing an environmental dust monitor for a construction site make sure that it has been certifi ed by the Environment Agency under its MCERTS scheme for indicative ambient particulate monitors. It’s also important to check the concentration level that is has been tested to; as a minimum this should be equal to or greater than 190 µg/m3


. In


addition to this, make sure that the monitor has been tested to measure both PM10 and PM2.5 simultaneously. Always ask to see a copy of the co-location test results and choose the monitor that has the highest correlation to the reference instrument.
