Analytical Instrumentation Vapor Pressure Measurements

of Crude Oil Using ERAVAP Analyser The vapor pressure measurement of crude oils gained public interest after several

severe rail car accidents in the past caused by a pressure build-up exceeding the maximum pressure of the rail cars. Since then a broad discussion is going on in the Canadian Crude Quality Technical Association (CCQTA) and the Crude Oil Quality Association (COQA, USA) on how to accurately measure the potential risk of various types of crude oils.

The highest vapor pressure that can build up in a closed compartment such as a rail car is reached if the liquid fi lls up the available space completely without any headspace. This equals a vapor to liquid ratio (V/L) of 0. As it is technically impossible to measure the vapor pressure at V/L = 0 this value has to be extrapolated from at least three different V/L ratio measurements at the same testing temperature. The obtained value is then called True Vapor Pressure (TVP).

Not only the measurement at V/L = 0 is challenging for vapor pressure testers. Also, the measurement of highly viscous crude oil samples necessitates specially designed instruments to handle the viscosity of the sample. With its high viscosity module ERAVAP heats its sample lines. This lowers the viscosity and enables viscous samples to be measured.

ERAVAP can handle pressurised and non-pressurised crude oil samples. It offers a temperature range from 0 to 120°C while handling V/L ratios down to 0 and it copes with a wide range of viscosities. Additionally, to crude oil measurements according to ASTM D6377 ERAVAP provides fully automated vapour pressure testing of gasoline and LPG according to the latest international standards such as ASTM D5188, D5191, D6378, D6897, EN13016 1+2, etc.

ERAVAP’s capabilities can be extended with Eralytics’ unique special application modules:

-) Low VP Module for the measurement of e.g. chemicals with vapour pressures as low as 0.1 kPa within an extended measuring range of -99 to 300°C.

-) High Viscosity Module with heating for the inlet and outlet of the analyser up to 70 °C to allow measuring of e.g. crude oil samples with an extremely high viscosity at ambient temperature.

-) Low Temperature Module to perform vapour pressure measurements of e.g. gasoline samples down to -20°C (-4°F)

All that makes ERAVAP the most comprehensive and versatile vapor pressure tester on the market, tying in with our motto: ERAVAP - Vapour Pressure Testing at its Best.

Additional Accreditations for Profi ciency Testing Programs is Gained and New

Cetane Program is Launched ASTM International have announced a new profi ciency testing program (PTP) to helps labs accurately test the combustion speed of diesel fuel and the compression it needs to ignite, also known as cetane. ASTM International also gained additional accreditations from the globally- recognised American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) for six existing PTP programs.

Generally, PTP programs help petroleum labs evaluate, improve, and document performance in conducting test methods.

The new cetane PTP will help labs meet accreditation requirements and ultimately enhance the quality of diesel fuels by providing data that shows how their performance of ASTM International test methods compares with others.

Enrolled labs will measure the characteristics of one gallon of diesel fuel using four test methods. This test sample will come from refi neries, storage facilities, storage tanks, and pipelines. The sample will be stable and homogeoneous, with physical and chemical properties similar to typical samples.

Along with the samples, each participating lab receives test instructions and data report forms. Labs will be able to measure cetane number (D613), derived cetane numbers (D6890, D7170, D7668), and other diesel fuel quality properties.

The program also includes electronic statistical summary reports and 24/7 online access to a customised portal. The fi rst cycle is in October, with more cycles in February and June. You can register on the ASTM’s website

Separately, A2LA expanded accreditation to six existing ASTM International PTPs: biodiesel, base oil, hydraulic fl uids and oils, lubricating greases, motor gasoline and reformulated gasoline.

This adds to the six programs that achieved A2LA accreditation in April, ranging from automated transmission fl uid to industrial gear oil.

Programs accredited through A2LA are assessed against criteria from a key standard: Conformity Assessment General Requirements for Profi ciency Testing (ISO/IEC 17043:2010). A2LA is the only independent, internationally-recognised accreditation body in the U.S. that offers a full range of comprehensive laboratory and laboratory-related accreditation services and training.

About 5,000 laboratories use ASTMs statistical quality assurance tools in the profi ciency testing programs.
