Leading Range of Process Instrumentation to be Displayed in Antwerp


StocExpo, now in its sixth year, has proven to be one of the central meetings places for the tank terminal industry. Anton Paar (Austria) will be represented among approximately 120 exhibitors from about 50 countries at booth no. 183, and will feature innovative measuring instruments for the process industry.


The new density transducer is now available in an explosion-proof and flameproof version (ATEX d and Class 1 Division 1). This allows for installation in hazardous areas worldwide without the need for barriers and safety transformers. L-Dens 427 continuously measures the density and temperature of petroleum products and non-aggressive chemicals. This small and compact transducer is easily integrated into measuring stations and adapted to individual applications. In its different versions, L-Dens 427 can be


connected to a flow computer or an evaluation unit. The transmitter version is a stand-alone instrument with API tables and concentration formulas included.


The SVM 3000 Stabinger Viscometer (pictured above) measures the viscosity and density of petroleum products like oils and fuels according to ASTM D7042. The results for kinematic viscosity are equivalent to ISO 3104 and ASTM D445. The Stabinger measuring principle with Peltier temperature control covers an exceedingly wide viscosity and temperature range with a single system. It requires only small amounts of sample and solvents and is a highly precise solution for work in mobile labs. For fast and reliable automatic sample handling the instrument can be extended with an Xsample sample changer, optionally with sample preheating.


The heated Xsample 352 H or 452 H warms up samples up to 80°C. The whole system is electrically controlled and accurate thermostatting ensures that the sample does not harden.


The petrol-resistant and intrinsically safe portable density meter (ATEX marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4) is ideal for quick quality control checks on-site. The instrument includes pre-installed API tables for product groups A, B and D (crude oils, fuels and lubricants) and identifies samples within seconds via the integrated RFID interface. The accuracy is 0.001 g/cm³.

New Digital Manometer with Data Management Software for Automated Testing of Oxidation Stability


The new PA5 digital manometer combined with the PetroNet® software


from Petrotest Instruments (Germany) form a proprietary data logging and management solution for determining the oxidation stability of fuels, lubricants and oils according to various standards including ASTM D 525, ISO 7536, ASTM D 942, D 2112 and D 4742. A unique feature of the PA5 manometer is the simultaneous recording of temperature along with pressure and time data. For fuels oxidation and other ASTM oxidation tests, the PA5 offers pre-defined routines. Test stop can be programmed based on criteria such as elapsed time, pressure drop or percentage of pressure drop.

New Technique for the On-line Monitoring of Amine Streams


AppliTek (Belgium) recently documented preliminary results of its research conducted in the field of Raman analyser systems. AppliTek has a firm reputation in the implementation of its on- line expertise in downstream applications. Until now AppliTek proved that real-time measurements on amines such as Monoethanolamine (MEA), Diethanolamine (DEA), Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), Diisopropylamine (DIPA) and Diglycolamine (DGA) are possible, and unique Raman spectra are associated with each of the amines.


Additional modeling of amine streams via Raman related to the decomposition products pointed out significant levels of other relevant parameters. The results demonstrate that the Raman technique, again, is a viable technique for monitoring not only


the acid gases (CO2 and H2S), and amine levels, but many other components such as water content, Nitrogen, alkalinity, acids and salts that are present in low ppm concentrations.


AppliTek will blend these findings with the expertise of its systems integrating division to work out an adapted version of its on-line Raman analyser system, baptised EZ-Raman®


. This system was implemented, first of its kind, in Europe for


monitoring component streams in a refinery. AppliTek was involved in the feasibility study, the development of the chemometric models, and the on-site commissioning of the whole system. The whole analyser system, including multiplexing unit, is Zone 0 certified under the EU ATEX Directive 94/9/EC for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

New Applications and Capabilities for Oil Leak Monitors


GE Analytical Instruments’ (USA) has recently supplied several major oil companies with its Leakwise Oil-on-Water Monitor- ing Systems to monitor their large tank farms. Multiple Leak- wise ID-223/2000 detectors have been installed near tanks to detect tank overfill, hydrocarbon build-up, and oil spills and leakages from pipes, pumps, valves and tank dewatering.


Leakwise ID-223/2000 sensors can detect and monitor oil layer buildup in the range of 0.3-25 mm on water or dry ground. They use wireless radio transmitters for sending status and alarm signals to a receiver located in a remote control room. The receiver, which can handle multiple transmitters, is connected via a modbus protocol to a Leakwise digital controller which has Modbus output to the customer's SCADA. The controller can relay outputs for alarm and control as well as Cellular GSM transmission of SMS messages to tank farm managers, operators, and fire fighters.


Offshore, the Leakwise ID-227W Oil-on-Water Sensor is monitoring desalination plant intakes, oil ports, and rivers to detect oil spills from boats or local industries. The Leakwise ID-227WL is mounted on a wave rider buoy with both solar power and a powerful point-to- point transmitter that can send signals as far as 20 km. The ID-227WL will soon be available with cellular transmission of alarms and status reports to multiple mobile phone numbers.

Monitoring Mercury Levels in the Environment Utilising Both Laboratory


and Process Instrumentation For over 25 years P S Analytical (UK) has been at the forefront of environmental monitoring, with particular emphasis on mercury determination and speciation. PSA has developed instrumentation for both laboratory and process applications backed up by an in-house team of experts, worldwide distributor network and on- going R&D programme. Mercury can be present in many forms and by coupling to chromatographic techniques, the PSA Merlin Instrument forms an ideal detector for mercury speciation studies, providing data required to define suitable removal strategies.


In the petrochemical industry mercury measurements are vital, since failure to detect the presence of mercury, even at low levels, has in the past led to catastrophic failures. PSA instrument routinely detects mercury levels at sub ppb levels over a wide range of matrices.


Working closely with industrial and academia, P S Analytical has developed a range of systems excell- ing at the measurement of mercury in gaseous and liquid streams. Tailoring instrumentation to customer require- ments enables systems to meet required safety standards for deployment in hazardous areas on production sites.


P S Analytical has played an active part in the development of ISO/CEN standards for these measure- ments. In order to ensure the validity of the data recorded, PSA, in association with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has developed a vigorous calibration protocol that is traceable to fundamental principles. Integrating this tool into our process range of equipment ensures that reliable and authenticated data is being provided on a continuous basis.
